Best Cities for Software Sales

What are some of the top states/cities to live in or near for software sales? I'd love to travel and live in a different state for a while, but not all of them have great job opportunities for tech sales. I'd also like to avoid spending most of my income on living expenses, so no interest in CA, NY, MA, CO, or IL... I've hear North Carolina is incredible, and there's a lot of tech in Charlotte and Raleigh Durham. Thoughts?

I made most of my fortune in ATX. SaaS jobs for days and no state income tax. Getting more expensive but still affordable when compared to SF or NYC.

Yeah ATX is great! For me, the big kicker is the traffic. It just keeps getting worse and worse because all of those SF & NYC people are moving to Austin!

ATX traffic was terrible. When I was interviewing for new roles lately, I flat-out refused to come into the office.

Charlotte and Atlanta are solid picks in the SE.

Yeah, Dallas is solid spot. Lots of companies moving over here and the DFW airport is amazing.

Many SaaS companies adjust pay based on cost of living, but I understand the reasoning behind it as well. If you love to travel keep an eye out for places that are hubs and can get you places without every trip taking to a hub before your actual destination.

Great advice! I'm close to DFW airport right now. And when I was younger, I witnessed how difficult and tedious it was for my dad, who was a sales leader, to have 2+ hour drives to airports when he was flying nearly every week. Definitely worth it to be close to the hubs.

Yes for sure, saw the same thing with a friend who pretty much lived in Hartsfield-Jackson due to having to fly into it for connections pretty much everywhere he went since he was coming out of a smaller airport in the SE.

It really depends... living in NC is great, but in terms of a territory to sell into it is not great - especially if you are in enterprise sales, i.e. north of $300K ARR deals. I have found that the area has limited really large enterprises, and that really goes for the entire mid-Atlantic region (NC, SC, TN, VA, KY etc.). There are some exceptions, e.g. if you sell into government obviously VA and DC are great. If you sell into healthcare and hospital systems there is a good base in TN (for some odd reason). There is some financial service in Charlotte, NC and some Tech in Raleigh, NC, but not a big amount and not many really big orgs.

Now, if you can work for a company and get the Southeast while living in NC, it is great but of course will come with some travel.

If you want to or have to live in your territory, then Texas is booming, especially Dallas and Austin. However, living expenses are going crazy especially housing. Nothing like SF NYC, but it is getting crazy expensive to rent and buy in DFW - if you can even find anything for sale.

Raleigh - thats where I’m based. We are known as the silicon valley of the east. Now that Apple announced they are bringing an office here, its only going to get bigger.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
It depends on what you want to do. I've lived most places you mention in your best or spent significant time there. If your thing is backyards, barbecue pork (so good), pools and the quieter things in life, green space, Raleigh is solid. If that sounds good but you want just a bit more action, Charlotte.

If you want to go skiing and hiking year around, Salt Lake is pretty sick. Colorado can be affordable if you want it to be by the way. Just don't live in downtown Denver or Boulder. Atlanta doesn't get enough love as a tech city. Austin is surprising affordable (and no income tax).

I do love back yards, pools, and green space. But I also love outdoors things like hiking, white water rafting, camping, skiing, etc. I have family in Littleton, CO and it doesn't seem too pricey... yet. And Austin isn't so much about the prices as it is the traffic. I'm in Dallas right now and every time I go to Austin the traffic is brutal!

Lived in many of them, for hiring and comp nothing beats SF/Bay Area... if the company is open to remote, I have lived in Chicago, Salt Lake city, Indiana and now in Spokane-WA. SLC is by far the best...
