Best coaching/leadership advice you have received

I have been a manager and a consultant and really enjoyed how unique one person's coaching/management style can be to the next. And how, even with vastly different styles, you can still see massive success and progress.

So- What is the best advice you ever received from a leader OR what is the best advice you have ever received about BEING a leader?

Don’t try to sell, don’t focus on hitting quota. Focus on helping people, have a normal conversation and find out what hurts them, what their real pain points are, and then show them how you solve those problems. If you do this, meetings will come on their own.

Best advice I have been given was candid feedback about how I approach conversations - sometimes I am very direct and can be blunt. Need to practice applying EQ in some situations.

Best advice I got about being a leader was how to be genuine. A lot of people try to change their personalities when they get a leadership role, when in reality people followed them before because they naturally draw people to them. Just be yourself, provide honest feedback, and listen to their goals and help coach/mentor.

Never been a direct manager, but I always end up being a team lead. My personal goal is to move into sales leadership some day so looking forward to seeing what others say on this thread!

Mine was the other way around. I was way to soft and diplomatic at first.

Don't try to become friends with your prospects/customers. Keep a good rapport, but your job is to make money off of them, that's a lot easier to do when they're not your friend.

Don't get hung on one on call or meeting, move on and keep looking ahead. You never know who is going to answer and can never predict how it will end.

That's right! You could always be one call away from a great day.

This is a really good post, thanks for posting this.  For me the best advice I've ever gotten from a sales manager was "You don't have to be a good closer if you're a good opener and you consistently follow-up"

I fully admit that I'm not a closer because it's just not in my personality but I've found success in sales through my consistency, follow-up, and by focusing on the LONG TERM gain of each customer/client/account.

Oh I love this. I have seen a lot of success with what I call my "polite persistence" even though I would say my actual closing skills are pretty week so I definitely get where you're coming from.

1. Transparency and honesty are key
2. Send clients a meeting recap the same day
