Best job search advice in Aug 2024?

Hi All,

I am in the market and wondering what's working for you and what is not? The market still feels apocalyptic. Anyone of you who had success recently, can you share?

I asked SalesGPT and while it gave me some direction, It is very generic. Only point 1, 2 and 7 below feels relevant. Other points in-between are just adding to noise and not driving results (atleast for me).

[SalesGPT response] Based on the insights shared by Bravado members, here are some key points to consider in your job search:

  1. Networking is crucial.
  2. Tailor your resume to each application.
  3. Reach out directly to hiring managers or team leads for positions you're applying for.
  4. Be selective in your applications.
  5. If you're open to it, let people know you're looking for work. Set your LinkedIn status to "open to work".
  6. Be persistent and patient. The job search may take some time, but with effort and patience, you'll find a role that suits you.
  7. Finally, treat your job search like a sales pursuit.

I would also reach out recruiters who contacted me a while back. I am against point 5 tbh.
What have you tried so far?

Even though it doesnโ€™t mean you are desperate, some Hiring Managers view someone with the banner that way

@Kosta_Konfucius, Yeah, and I guess desperation in sales and in job search doesnโ€™t help, yeah? But I wonder why ? Why does Desperation messes up with our minds to present yourselves best ?

i have always been against the open to work banner. recruiters look for the ppl with the profile that fits the JD. They assume everyone has a job. they dont look for ppl with the banner.

Ditch point 5, recruiters like to steal people, if they think you're actively hunting they know they'll have to be ultra competitive with comp.

Don't be afraid to take your skills to a new industry. I left tech because I couldn't find a job in the oversaturated job market that was willing to pay something close to market value. I moved to another business entirely and was paid well on the front with an ote that is better than most tech jobs where I live.

GPT is almost always going to give a generic answer AND be confidently wrong as well.
Those are all possible tactics, but definitely aren't weighted equally.
Networking is almost always going to be your best bet, and treating a job search like a sales pursuit means that you do more than toss your resume into a portal and hope for the best.

I got a great recommendation from a community member to utilize AI to scan the web for job opportunities at companies that fit your criteria.

The best piece of advice Iโ€™ve gotten is to just go in on reaching out to people, in and out of your network. Connect with people that are at companies you want to work at.

Itโ€™s just like sales, worst thing they can do is say they donโ€™t want to talk to you.

Did you find any specific scanning tools that has helped? Thanks @BasstheBear

Decent list. I'll also disagree with 5 - I truly don't think that it helps and can actually really hurt.

I was going to say 'budget more *calendar) time than you think it'll take' but you kind of covered that in 6.

Patience. I am in the same situation...got to remember the hiring managers or boss's you'll potentially be working for go on holiday at this time too. That's what I have been finding anyway, that and that everyday when I search no new jobs are up!
