Best way to get a remote sales job if non-US citizen?

Hey peeps!

I'm currently employed but I want to look for new opportunities and get more shhmooneyy! Preferably a US company that might have better compensation since right now I'm getting paid a Colombian salary ($12 USD per hour) which is not bad here but in the states would be way better. I live in Colombia and have 5 years of sales and team managing experience.

Can anyone work for an American company if they're not US citizens/residents? How do I get paid? Any work visas or legal docs required? What can I do to compete with locals and land a remote job?

Thanks!

You need to have a green card/work visa to work for an American company even if it's remotely. You'd have to find a company willing to sponsor your visa. And unless you have skills and experience that an American does not, your chances of finding a company willing to do it for you are very slim as it costs them money and is a way bigger pain than just hiring someone with a US visa/citizenship.

You can try and apply but have realistic expectations.

Completely incorrect about everything.

I work from NZ for a US company as 1099. No work visa required. Same as how they employ indians and ukrainians as software devs

I am correct about working as a typical employee but forgot about the independent contractor option, Lisa cleared that route up below. Not every company will hire someone as an IC/not everyone wants to work as an IC but it's worth looking into for sure.

I have sponsored others to work for me in the past, and I can assure you that it costs roughly $3000 with a lawyer to hire someone who is not a US citizen.

If you think your skill set is good/rare enough that a potential employer will front that kind of cash and logistical headache, go for it.

You don't necessarily need a visa sponsorship if you're willing to work as a contractor for the US company (instead of a full-time employee). Generally this means you get paid a competitive salary, but you don't get any of the benefits, e.g. health insurance, etc. However, it's difficult to know which companies are open to those arrangements, although startups are generally willing to be more flexible on that front.

You can try angel.co and search for remote jobs based in the US to see if there's any that would be willing to hire you without visa sponsorship.

Yep! We have a number of non-US employees at Bravado, and that's how we've been able to hire all of them.

I would suggest getting a work visa also or green card but you can always marry someone in the US and become a citizen that way. Best of luck!

Apply, but remember you will cost them money because of visa sponsorship. So you need to over class the other candidates

I work for an American company in Canada. I am an independent contractor and they buy all my time. You can do it. Plus the exchange rate is amazing.
