Best ways to get close with remote teams

I have held 2 fully remote jobs now and one big thing that's missing from these roles, despite the amazing freedom of not going into an office, is the culture of actually being around people and forming friendships.

Things like quarterly off-sites and Fantasy Football leagues partially fill that void, but virtual happy hours suck ass and are not the same as being able to connect in person.

For those of you who have experienced this, what are some ways that you have bridged this gap? Or is it just a price to pay for remote work and something you can't necessarily fix?

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
As cliche as it sounds, among us, so I can stab marketing and that one annoying intern in the back.

I video chat with my team daily. Then I will randomly video each one sep throughout the week to check in one on one. Keeps it fresh.

No quarterly or at least annual in-person meetings?   That's where I connect and then it's pretty easy to maintain a work relationship with those with whom I enjoyed the company of.  I've also found reaching out via IM/company channels for basic Q&A leads to connections.  It's pretty quick to find out who's great to chat with and who isn't.  I've

Yeah, I'm fully remote with no physical office either. It's likely I'll never actually meet my coworkers. Frankly, there's only one AE I'd grab a beer with.

For me I'm fully remote, though about an hour and a half away from the office. I'll go in once a month to get in-person face time and check in. But besides that I get what you mean.
My company is smaller anyways and we don't have much culture besides the occasional birthday lunch for whoever.
If/when I move to a full on remote company this is one of my main concerns.

Yeah my whole company is fully remote and doesn't even have a physical office, but I think they are looking into getting one which would be a game changer if I could go there once a month

I think it all depends on what you're looking for - if it's important for you to be around colleagues regularly and form that family-vibe, then maybe a remote gig isn't for you. Potentially a hybrid office/home option is better. I do feel like I'm on an island, but can stay productive on the pieces I need to execute on. Conferences and quarterly meetings mostly cover what I need personally. All comes down to personal preference.

We had a major Skype channel with a bunch of us remote ICs. We kept it active daily and it made a huge difference.

I like doing zoom happy hour with drinks, maybe ending an hour early on either a Thursday or Friday to have social time.

Unfortunately I think it’s just part of the game. I personally try snd schedule at least one peer lunch per week.

Yeah that is what I am starting to think, which is fine, but could be better.

I do eat lunch alone, in my basement, with the lights off, in a puddle... so maybe if I tried a peer lunch that would be better

Since pandemic pushing everyone to wfh, many people are of the opinion that all aspects of businesses (at least for software) can be done remotely. How many of you still believe that persona touch goes a long way to close a sales deal?
