This ideal saved my sales career... was about a week away from quitting completely. Had a sales leader sit down and explain the difference of the role of sales person and the identity of the individual. Saved me from ending up in marketing

This is a CONSTANT struggle for me. Iโ€™m trying to be very deliberate about finding myself outside of my professional life and motherhood. I was asked recently what I do for fun and realized I donโ€™t- I donโ€™t do anything for fun. Ever. Itโ€™s work or momming 24/7. One day Iโ€™ll discover who I amโ€ฆ I hope. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

It doesn't matter if you are the "best or smartest" in the room If no one respects you. I had to learn how to humble myself. It costed me a few promotions.

You dont have to live in CA to work in Tech Sales

But I live in California.

Let me flip that.

You don't have to work in tech sales if you live in California.

idk about that. everyone I knew in tech pre-covid wasn't in cali and never had been. I think there was just such a large concentration there it gave a misconception that you had to be.

could totally be true. im in the midwest and i had SUCH a small amount of companies I could work for pre covid if I wanted to be in Saas since I had to be in office.

then post covid everything changed.

id love to see if someone has collected real numbers. the amount of ppl that can now work in Saas and live in random areas like has to have increased a ton.

I live on the east coast, pre covid just outside of DC and now in Raleigh,NC. I feel like pre-covid it was a coastal thing in general. A lot of companies on either coast. and a lot of Cali tech companies typically have an east coast office as well unless they're super small.

for sure. i actually moved to Wake Forest NC for a year because the company i had just started working for had an office in Raleigh. Then they decided to go full remote for ever.....so we moved back to the mid west haha

If you don't get what you want, ask. People don't know what you want until you tell them, and you have little to lose if you ask politely. After all, as of right now, the answer is already "no", so you might as well ask!

You don't actually need to be as technical as you think you do.

As in, don't be afraid to go after more complex/consultative sales jobs without domain expertise - that can be taught.

setting goals to help you succeed should not be career goals.

yes, have career goals too. but those ultimately aren't what's going to make you succeed. The personal life goals are whats going to motivate you to kill it at work too.

commenting again to add... make your intentions known and speak them into existence.

If you're an SDR and want to be an AE, make sure every single person who would be involved in the process of making that happen knows it and hears it from you often.

If you're in SMB sales and want to make it to enterprise, see above.

Don't leave anything up to chance, guessing, or mystery. Say what you want and say it often to anyone who can have a positive impact on making it happen.

For the longest time I tried to explain why what they wanted me to do was not the best thing to do. Then I spent a ton of energy on trying to logically explain why I wanted to do was better.

Until, I discovered that nobody wanted the debate. They just wanted to be right and rarely followed up on their request and would typically forget all about it.

So, there is no downside to smile and agree and then ignore whatever it was and just do what I wanted to do anyway.

I wish someone would have grabbed me by the shoulders, given me a good shake and told me "you will make more money if you leave financial services NOW!"

i drank the cool aid SO HARD in that first career and it ended up setting my family back financially pretty bad.

thankfully i was able to turn it around but WOW.
