Book recommendations for vacation?

Not looking to fanatically prospect this week, heading to the beach for Thanksgiving. Looking for off-topic books, not a sales guru etc.

Any good books the WR recommends?

My most recent read & recommendation is Horse Soldiers, it's an account of the first soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan after 9/11,

Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes. One of my favorite books. Karl is a Marine who served in Vietnam and was awarded 16 medals during his time in country two of which being purple hearts.

The book is about a company of Marines and their time in Vietnam.

If you like Horse Soldiers you will probably love this book. Took the dude 30 years to write it. Draws on his own experiences in the war.

Another Vietnam war suggestion: "Hero Found: The Greatest POW Escape of the Vietnam War".

They made the story into a movie (Rescue Dawn) but like most times the book is better.

His style isn't for everyone. It's something you have to take your time reading and also be in the mood for.

Yeah, I don’t disagree with a lot of what he says but it takes him 10x as long as it should to get to his point.

He's too intelligent for most people to truly pick up what he throws down. I'm certainly not at his level so I struggle to get through some of his stuff too.

I have several, depending on what you feel like doing.

Where Men Win Glory, Jon Krakauer.  The story of Pat Tillman.  Warning:  it will (should) make you angry.

Touching the Void, Joe Simpson.  True story of incredible survival.

I generally read fiction when I'm vacationing, though.  Murder mysteries and/or SciFi.  I am about to reread David Brin''s Uplift Series.  If you like works that transport you into different regions (more murder mysteries): The Dublin Murder Squad books by Tana French;  I just finished all the C.J. Box Joe Pickett (game warden in Wyoming) series; the William Kent Krueger Cork O'Connor mysteries are based in Minnesota, and Louise Penny writes series that mostly take place in Quebec.

I could go on...reading is my guilty pleasure when I usually should be doing something else.  Like laundry.

It all just depends on what you're looking for.    I read a bit of everything, but I tend to binge-read the way many people binge watch TV series.  I'll start at the beginning, and if I like book 1, I'll go all in and finish the series.   The Kindle has saved me there more times than I care to remember.  I bounce between the device and paper books.

C.J. Box Joe Pickett sounds like Yellowstone, adding to my list.

He does visit Yellowstone in one of the books.    Joe Pickett is a game warden, so you'll virtually travel through Wyoming.

"This is Not a T-shirt" by Bobby Hundreds. If you like streetwear or the hustle of creating a business/substantiating a category, then it's a great read!

I like the novels by Drew Magary, Point B, The Hike and The Postmortal. Shorter reads. Enjoyable for vacation.

If you enjoy non-fiction you can't go wrong with Erik Larson.

Those are fun reads, too.  You learn a little about things you didn't know before, and how they relate to a broader story.

You might like the Pat Tillman story by Jon Krakauer, titled "Where Men Win Glory."

Phenomenal author.

I recommend it to everyone. Kind of a narrative autobiography about an addict that escapes Australian prison and becomes part of the Bombay mob. Long, but very well written

Not sure if psychological thrillers are your cup of tea, but if so, here are a few that I loved:
Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
Have you seen me by Kate White

This thread is more fun reading. On the business book side I enjoy some self help/sales books, looking to unwind a bit this week.

How about Kitchen Confidential? I just watched the Anthony Bourdain movie on my flight home and it reminded me to get back around to it.
Also, now I want delicious food lol

Check out the Vince Flynn series, very good CIA/spy thriller type fiction, but based on enough real life events to make you think it could be true (there was a book that dealt with a COVID style pandemic caused by terrorists).

Oh yeah. It's good. Plus there's like 15 of them so once you get hooked on one you've got reading material for a while. Rinse and repeat.

Oh boy
Since nobody else has posted it....why don't you pick yourself up a Georges Simenon mystery?

He wrote a bunch of police procedural/detective novels from 1940-1980. They're set in Paris, France and they follow an inspector named Maigret. Classic gumshoe/explore Parisian life novels.

Each book is like 140 pages and takes about one day to read, if you make an effort about. Perfect lazy day beach reading!
