Boom-a-rang?

Anyone see people who used to work for your org leave in the last year to go to another org only to comeback to yours? This seems like its happening all the time over here to the point that my company is starting to use them as fodder for people not to leave.

Anyone seeing this? Done it themselves? Thinking about it now?

Are you seeing boom-a-rang effect in your company?

Yep, leave big company because they don't bump you to what you could make elsewhere, make more elsewhere, have desperate outreach from hiring manager at first company, dangling still more money.

I feel like its more common with big companies, where you get wrapped in the politics and leave, but eventually come back..or leave for a pay raise, then use the new job's salary to get higher pay when you return.

That makes more sense, but also wouldn't it just be easier to pay people what they're worth in the first place?!

Its one of those things, typically if you stay with the same company for awhile you are paid less (at least with base). A company will just give a X% raise which they know you will be happy enough with.

But if you are outside the company they got to make it worth losing all your deals you have in progress

Oh yea, I know how it works but I just object to it

Kinda like how tipping/tipped wages work.

You would think it would work that way, but it doesn't. It happens all the time at big companies. Boomerang is a real thing.

I did this. Left in May of 2021 came back in November of 2021. Left for a pay increase and to stay in sales. Was gradually getting too involved in a department that I built from the ground up and saw that as my only way of staying in sales and continuing my career in the right direction.

Company I went to turned out to be a total shit show so I began my search again. Old COO found out I was looking and I got a call from my old (now current) CEO telling me they wanted me back and offering me the same salary I had at the shit company and a promise to stay in sales. I started the next day.

Imagine if they just paid you that from the start.

Honestly it worked better for me this way. Plus the pay wasn't the real reason for me leaving so much as it was the direction my career was headed at the time.

Yup my new hire training was majority boom-a-rangs. I see it as a positive of I am working somewhere that people after leaving wanting to come back.

I have never seen this, those that typically get laid off, majority of the time the company had their reason about who they kept... But, what has happened recently, I could see it as a good thing.

i have not seen this be a thing but I think it is a good sign. Not just that the company is a good place to work, but that the culture is good.

if the company will welcome back former employees, that is a good place. most places ive worked at would NOT want to hire me back because they took me leaving super personal.

I worked for a big company that was notorious for not giving internal hires the amount of $$ they were paying external hires into the same department. Example: internal rep is making $190K OTE, interviews and lands a more strategic role where an external rep is offered $250K OTE, but internal rep is offered $220K. Leave company for another with $280K OTE (because having that big name company behind you really helps land other roles), immediately gets hiring managers asking if rep wants to return. That rep can leverage the return into $300K+ if s/he wants.

Great place to work, but the sales org has been run like this for a while, so the churn is real.

Trying to save me after the fact I've gone makes me view them poorly. Why wasn't I important enough to keep in the first place? I wouldn't go back.

Happened at my last job, copier sales. I told my coworker: If I ever come back, regardless of reason, put a bullet in me.

I stand by it.

I wonder if these people left your company for money but came back for culture. Either way it says good things about your company: "the grass was not greener elsewhere"

Recently had a friend that I originally met at the company try and boomerang back with a referral from me. Told him about all the recent happenings and his reply was simply, โ€œoh, all good then, nvmโ€
