Bringing laptop on vacation

fellow salespeople- saw this on LinkedIn about bringing your laptop on PTO. curious what your thoughts are regarding it

my take - fuck no I don't bring my laptop. whole point of PTO is to unplug and not be in-tune with work. I have a team member cover for me and make sure they are comped fairly.

I'm sure the responses will be mixed, but if it's true PTO then I would answer no. Plus with email on your phone, laptop is overkill even if you wanted to work a little.

Unless I'm running a demo or preparing contracts/a pitch, I don't need a laptop.

And I'm NOT doing that on vacation.

Although I did bring my laptop to the cottage, I only cracked it once and that's because I forgot to do something.

Otherwise EFF THAT

It's staying on my desk until my return to work. I will go so far as to log out of email and slack while OOO as well.

I've never not taken it with me, except for international travel... I cannot even imagine that separation anxiety.

I'm taking it. Because if I have a monster deal that could pay for this and another vacation and they need something, I'm gonna do it.

Nope. Don't do it. Don't tempt your guilt. Treat yourself.

I'm heading out of the country tonight, and wasn't planning on bringing it, but I'm going to on the tiny chance that I somehow test positive for covid (despite being vaccinated) on the way back, and then have to quarantine in costa rica for 2 weeks... still tempted to say fuck it and leave it behind

If I'm legit traveling and on a full vacation then no. If I need to reply to an email I have my phone for absolute emergencies.

I bet this is generational. I see a lot of coworkers at 45+ who don’t own personal laptops. They have a work one, maybe a desktop and take the work one everywhere.

I am not 45+ and dont own a personal laptop. Got an iPad that achieves the same purpose and is way smaller and easier to carry around.

Check the font size your corowkers use that are 45+. It’s maxed out on their phones/iPads etc. this is anecdotal of course but it’s my take ha.

I have some coworkers who hit this weird sweet spot, that their first cell phone was a work phone because they were on call and their first laptop was a work laptop so that they could work from home. They’ve never purchased either a cell or a laptop for personal use.

Don’t be a hero, if you have to work on vacation then you didn’t plan properly and set clear expectations. It’s a flex to have boundaries, don’t let the guilt get the best of you.

Nope no way.  My away message always has something along the lines of "no access to phone or email"

Honestly I take it and work some in the mornings and late afternoons to stay caught up. I feel bad while doing it, but honestly hate catching up and have had no one to cover my work for 5 years…

I have, but it was just to see if any deals closed. Checked it once a day. Ended up hitting quota while doing nothing on vacation. It was a good feeling :)

Feel like anything that pressing can be accomplished between my phone and someone to cover me from work. No laptop unless it serves me drinks

I always bring it, but I don't always open it. I get anxious that a prospect is going to need something I cannot access from my phone, and I am a control freak so I don't trust anyone else to get it for me. This is a character flaw and I don't recommend it, haha

The more work I can do on vacation the more vacations I can take.  It's always in the carry-on.

No need for the laptop when all my insecurities are in my phone!

It depends on the length and how much I'd use my laptop. Like for a half hour meeting on a 3 week long vacation, I may pop in and listen with my camera off. If I'm gone for less than 5 days though, shit can wait.

Both base and OTE jump are significant. That’s a plus for the new role. But, consider that public company vs startup are very different. Since you’re still getting comfortable with a closing role, coaching may be important to you, which you’re more likely to get from senior AEs and management at your current firm.

Finally consider that you are going to a startup, if things go very good the small company might skyrocket and you will grow with it, however if things go bad the company might even close. It’s not going to be as stable as your current job. That’s why the pay is better, it has more risk. Are you willing to take that?
