Business with friends and family

So these is a tricky one, there are tons of family business, a lot of theme are successful, same with friends, people decided to innovate so with a few friends they create a company and oh boy company goes big.

I personally think starting a business with family or friends is something pretty delicate, there has to be mutual trust, boundaries, and a lot of seriousness, and not everyone would do it for a lot of reasons

Would you do it? what would be your requirements, what would you do if a familiar or a friend comes with an idea?, and how would you handle it, including worst case scenario when everything goes to hell? I would like to know

Personally I'd steer clear of going into business with friends/family. It could get too tricky.

Yeah, don't do business with family unless you want to hate your life. It's hard to fire family.ย

I'd agree. It depends how close you are, distant, maybe. Close, nah.ย

I have started business lines with both friends and family. I'd say it's easier with friends since usually you have the same hierarchy, with family is tough when you are a bigger holder than a parent, since they demand authority as a parent, even though you own a bigger percentage of the company.

My advice write everything down in a legal faction, and if you are unsure then don't do it, it's usually a gut type situation.ย

I hate when people abuse of things like "i'm older than you' or "i'm your aunt" or stuff like that, I like the idea of getting everything through the legal, its saferย

It's dumb, but it happens, trust me I've been there. They might not say it, but they feel the authority they don't possess and try to apply it.

Then don't if the fear comes before listen to that, I wouldn't do it with any other family memeber that wasn't my dad, no even my mom (I love her, but she would not be a good business partner) that's where the balance goes.ย

Im huge on risk aversion, Id rather either go all in or not at all. I would try to keep away from family though as it can create a painful dynamic but others may think its the best thing theyve done so I guess it depends!

It's important to make your network grow with competent and trustworthy ppl. Competence build confidence and a man without friends is a man without power ;)ย

idk, from my personal experience it could go either way. Sometimes business and family really don't mix.

I would never do it. Family and friends are too important to ruin with business. Iโ€™ve seen so many families fall apart due to it.ย

When I was a kid I wanted to be a Spice Girl, and then a veterinarian. Spice Girls were over by the time I graduated and to be a vet you basically have to do medical school. My heart said yes but my calculus and chemistry grades said girl, no.

When I was a kid, I did not know what a sales rep was, but, my mindset was that I wanted to be someone "that makes good money from an office since my dad was a truck driver and I wanted to be different" and that is quite accurate actually.
