Cadillac of Sales

SaaS is clearly the cool kids club for salespeople these days.

6 years ago for me it was medical device. my manager then said "this is the cadillac of all sales jobs''.....he was actually pretty right, the top reps made stupid amounts of money.

past 3 years i've been selling a service, mind you it's not software. but still tough.

Which industry is truly the "cadillac" of sales. I think cadillac's are outdated and for old people. so let's power rank the sales industries based on cars.

Here's my opinion:

Mclaren/Bentley-SaaS/Tech

Lamborghini- Med Device

Ferrari- cybersecurity

Lexus-AI

Cadillac-Telecomm

Ford/pontiac/kia/subaru: real estate, insurance, retail...

Product isn't a guarantee of income. There are people who make multimillions on real estate and people who can't close a damn door even when selling a hot SaaS product.

Or what industry has the most upside?

Which industry is harder to fail in?

Like @funcoupons is saying, I know ppl making $1MM / year in insurance sales.....and ppl in insurance sales making less than $30K....

You could have your same answer (well what about the guys in xx industry making a million a year!!) about any question. of course there are exceptions..

That's the thing - you have to be naïve to hear "I work in SaaS" and assume the person is ballin just because of that. There is no car equivalent to a sales profession lol. Also shouldn't assume someone is well off just because they have a nice car. I know plenty of broke mafuckas with leases that bury them more into debt every month.

Also, the biggest ballers are rarely the people walking around with 50k Rollies and 300k cars. Especially in the Bay area. The rich tech sales guys look only one notch higher than the homeless people they pass on the way to their bougie condo.

Burn Towns, Get Money

If you're in the right market and can move volume, Real Estate can make you so much damn money.

If you sell 2-3 houses/month at 3% commission/house, in a HCOL ($1M+ ASP / house), that's a Milly in commish in a year.

Or, you know, just sell one $34 MM house.

SaaS might be the sexiest, and have some of the highest bases. But I know plenty of people selling windows/doors pulling in way more than I am.

What funcoupons said, product isn't a garuantee of wealth. I'd say the Cadillac of sales is being in a job you care about enough to succeed in it. We see lots everywhere of people "making millions" in saas and other roles but realistically the vast majority out there and dare I say even on here (kill me now), seriously overinflate their "income" when talking about it online. The top 10% of anyone in any industry make all the money, the rest are just passengers.

I've been in SaaS sales (f/k/a ASP and before that f/k/a "hosted") for decades. SaaS as a delivery method has been around for decades, so isn't the new, great, flashy thing. It's also a delivery method for software. If you can sell concepts and value, it's for you. If tech isn't your thing, then you'd want to sell something that speaks to you and you are comfortable selling.

If you're asking what's cool and flash so you can impress people...I can't help. My inner geek adores the tech world, but arrogant showy bastards are the bane of a sales team, so if impressing outsiders with a super cool job is the goal...look elsewhere. Or better still, go work for my competition. ;)

SaaS is considered a hot industry because founders need sales people. So, the founders burn other people's money for people that are capable of repeating a demo in order to get people to subscribe to some software so that the other people can get their money back. Sorry. It's not the top industry.

Personally that rep who is hitting 100% + quota everymonth & getting promoted and invested in is that Mclaren of sales. they can hop to whatever role they find sexiest and make a killing. Theres plenty of people in 'sexy' industries hating their lifes who have terrible managers/culture/performance.

That being said, I'd prefer HR only because I'd rather help make workplaces less fucking toxic and traumatic. thats my mclaren

i think it depends on the person. Some people are good enough to sell ketchup popicles to an eskimo on a hot day, some people cant sell something even if they are giving it away.
