Can I get my COO to sandbag a deal for me??

If you saw one of my last posts Im on this crazy Metrics Based comp plan for Q1 and 2. which means i dont get commission for any deals that close. (not a problem since i didnt have any ready to close)

Until this week.

One prospect sends us an email out of the blue that the contract is out for signature. Great news!

Except if I want to get paid on it, i need it to hit in Q3 which for me starts on July 1 (like most of you).

this is a $300K deal.

Then today my COO slacks me saying the contact sent him the contracts ready to be singed by our CEO......(The ONE time I need something to move slowly!)

So i send him a text saying "we are going to hang on to that contract a few days right?"

Anyone making guesses on what he will say???

Would you do anything to try and get it into next quarter?

If he is a decent dude he will either go to bat for you and make sure you get paid for it if it closes this week or slow things down to close on Friday.

Tell him straight up. It's a good sized deal and you'd like to see some commission from it. Everyone understands the universal language of money.

Does the signature date matter or term start date? Depending on your industry those could be different.

yeah great point. Its signature date as long as the term start date is in the same quarter. (with a grace period for end of quarter deals like this, which actually works against me haha)

Damn you really got a weird comp plan. Awards for groundwork in Q1-2 but discourages orders until Q3-4.

I guess I'm wondering why the customer is in touch with your COO directly. I always want to maintain comms and not give the customer a direct line with my boss.

Maybe you're having internet issues, or you're sick and you have a dr appointment tomorrow and your phone is acting up. Any number of reasons that things can't be finalized in the next 2 days.

yes very strange. especially since this was not suppose to be the plan when I signed on.

They are going directly to the COO because this is a deal i inherited. It was in process before I started so once I was introduced the COO has still been involved.......he has a hard time letting go.

ahhh I see.

Inherited deals are tough. I'm afraid you might not have a good position since you just got that sweet retro pay and might not want to rock the boat.

IMO if they are comping you for engagement/outreach that should be in addition to an existing sales commission plan. There are ways to do both, either as separate or combined plans.

I think the inherited piece makes a huge difference here and weakens your position. I dont think it automatically means no, but makes it a little harder for you to negotiate.

All that said, I agree with Lord here, you should still be comped on closed deals no matter what , the metrics based stuff should be in addition.

really good point. I am curious to see what happens.

if i dont get commission, i cant be TOO upset since it was inherited, and im getting full OTE for 2 quarters anyway.

BUT

if he is serious about trying to get his team to hit their OTE and do whats best for us then I hope he will fight for it.

Ya I honestly think you are in a win win spot here. How much time and effort have you put into this deal? Be honest haha

Sandbagging karma ALWAYS catches up. Might not be today, might not be 5 years from now, but the sales gods will take their vengeance
