Can someone teach me how to unplug?

I joke with people and say, "Hey, I'm in sales, you can reach me ANYTIME!" Which for the most part is true and I truly don't mind being reachable if a customer or prospect needs something and that's the best time for them to talk.

BUT I can't seem to take an 'EFFIN vacation and realllly shut it down, totally unplug, throw up the out of office and deal with it when I come back. In former roles I didn't trust anyone else to cover me while I was out but now that's not that the case.

Any advice? Is there rehab for this? Passions Malibu but for sales addicts?

Are you able to truly unplug from work?

It starts with unplugging every weekend. Everyday after your work hours. You get that foundation right, the long term effect is massive.

Love whatย @Donniedarkoย said. It's good to also remember that we're not doctors and surgeons here. No lives are on the line, and if that email or message comes through on a Saturday or 9:30pm on a weeknight, it usually can wait until the next day :) Also my manager knows if he really needs to get a hold of me asap, he can text me.ย

Something I think a lot of sales folks struggle with:ย

You work to live, not live to work.ย

Your job isn't all there is to who you are as a person - in sales it's hard to remind ourselves of that because the highs of closing a deal is so rewarding, and the lows seem to hit harder than most things. But at the end of the day, it's a job. Maybe it's your career, but it's not who you are as a human being.ย

I find that going somewhere without phone signal can really help. Even a hike in the woods with phone on silent mode for a little while is nice. I also snooze notifications from 5:30p-7:00a so Iโ€™m not being reminded of work constantly. They are people with kids, they can relate. Itโ€™s all about sending boundaries for yourself, and then training your customers.ย

To your pain: I used to work for a company that made me talk to clients while on PTO, I answered emails on my honeymoon in Italy. It was awful.ย

I like the silencing notifications, smart.ย  It's really just a behavior change on my part.ย  ย 90% of all after-hours shit can wait anyway!

You could always try truly unplugging, go hiking and camping where you are literally disconnected.ย

I used to dread them early in my career. Iโ€™ve now come to see the benefits and I have fun while doing it. We also record our role playing sessions and put them as game tapes for everyone to checkout
