If you do a little research on the CEO (he's changed his last name), you'd learn he kinda enjoys negative press and blow upsย

I don't fault a company for doing what they need to do to sustain their operations, including layoffs. Better isn't a charity. That said - an awkward speech via a mass Zoom call is NOT the way to do this. What a big middle finger to everyone. The CEO sounds like an insufferable blowhard, making the call all about how sad he is. Fuck off.

I've been laid off once, affecting about 30% of the workforce by seniority. I was one of the newer employees so I was affected. I was disappointed that my lay off notice came as a Zoom call (with HR and my direct manager present,) where my manager was literally forced to read HR jargon off a script. Our team was small and we worked closely together every day. My manager was a good guy and I could tell he was upset about it. I wasn't upset I was laid off as the writing was kind of on the wall, but they could have had some class and allowed managers to have real conversations with their employees rather than force them to read some canned HR bullshit.ย

Oh boy
How would you lay off 1000 people gracefully and humanely? While the CEO could definitely use some time in paddy's intern cabinet, he ripped the band-aid off quick.

Then again, I'm a sucker for abuse. It's why I'm in sales!

My preference would be to have HR employees do it in small groups by team, seniority level/something other than 900 people at once. Give employees an opportunity to ask questions etc. Not have the unlikable CEO give a lame, awkward, and insincere speech. Not do it right before Christmas.ย

This guy definitely MUST watch paddy and I shower.ย

Entire company I worked for in the 2000s was let go on a company wide confrence call. Sucked. President was like "I don't know how to say this, but we are ceasing operations effective immediately, I am so sorry for everyone" then hung up. I can still hear that beep.ย

First of all, I don't support this, and the CEO is a scumbag. However, it is in no way the company's interest to give them an opportunity to ask questions. There's no benefit there.ย
Also, if we're calling the first week of December "right before Christmas", then basically if a company makes a decision in November to lay off, then nothing can be done until January? If it was me, I'd say do it sooner rather than later and give an opportunity to find a new job before the new year.ย

Doing it the kindest way is one of those layoff/firing best practices that actually is a best practice.

When I made my post last week about it, it was before I saw the video and also before I realized it was 900 people. Just damn. What a way to shit the bed.

Business decision aside, which is what the layoff was, I have now that I've seen the full account of the call....and Vishal can get fucked.

Edit: He did not say this (the stealing bit) on the call, he said this in an "anonymous" blog post on Blind.

Having sat through a similar announcement...the Better one was god awful. When senior leadership pulled me and others into a conference room to say we were being re-orged right after announcing others were being laid off you could at least tell the guy felt bad about it. What a turd.

This proves one thing in my head. 95% of companies DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. They all say they do and they all lie. You are a number and thatโ€™s it. Remember that when you make your career decisions.ย

I feel like the worst part is he clearly overscaled, and took no responsibility. I understand at some point layoffs are unavoidable, but 10% of your workforce is a massive fuck up that you need to take ownership of.ย

Not that Im on the job hunt, but I would never work for a Softbank owned company. Tons of companies do layoffs, but seems like they're much worse than most about it.

In Feb, I wanted to purpose being a LO. And let me know tell you getting hired at a mortgage company during that boom was fucking terrible every single recruiter and manger I talked with we're like a walgreens Jordan Belfort.ย

I got asked how much I'd like to make my first year, I said realistically making 100k my first year learning the business would be my minimum and he scolded me and talked about how people in office did 300-500k a year and I need bigger ambitions. I've been waiting for rates to go up so I can see how these assholes are gonna fire everybody they just hired lol.

After I was laid off in April 2020, I had a few ex-colleagues that had moved on to Better and asked them to send over my resume. For whatever reason the Better recruiters never got back to me for an interview( which I never understood bc I was more experienced than my ex-colleagues that worked there at the time) and now I see that I dodged a bullet. Reaaaallly shitty of them to treat their employees this way
