I thought that's what a RSM was - managing a team?

Not sure if I can mention names, but I've come across 2 recent (cybersecurity) companies' job adverts that specifically state IC roles while bearing the title of RSM

strange. It's like my old company with a title of Outside Sales vs. Inside Sales, where the outside sales people never left the building... oxymoronic

It's an easy way to 'add value' without having to pay for it, I guess...

If you think RSM is overblown, many VP of Sales roles are also ICs. Typically its to reflect on their level of experience but IMO its overblown as well.

The company I'm at is so guilty of this... were a small sales team(8 total reps) and there are 4 VPs of Sales.. Only one actually manages

foreal foreal......Some recruiter reached out to me asking if I would be interested in a VP role. Asked what the comp was and how many this role would manager.

$300k 50/50 split and they were going to be an IC role.

If they are IC being paid like an EAE, that is not a VP.

Stop the click bait BS

Yeah, this is always so confusing. I get why companies do it, but it's incredibly frustrating when you're trying to figure out who to contact.

"No" - Director of Earth

Seriously though, this is one of my pet peeves. For example, I think a Business Development position should mean an exec high-up in a company focused on networking, partnerships and growth into new industries, not a BDR.

Unfortunately, it is so widespread now you kind of have to have an inflated title just to get some credibility. That or make up stupid titles like "Director of People".

Regional Sales Manager
As someone who actually is a RSM with direct reports and runs a region, there are ICโ€™s in my company with VP titles. It a way to give people a title without the compensation.

So two things to consider hereโ€ฆ
1.) in this context, โ€œregionalโ€ doesnโ€™t always mean geographic. Some companies use this as a way to consolidate titling, but ultimately refers to someone responsible for a particular geographic region OR area of the business (product line, internal org, etc)
2.) re: VPs and such with no direct reportsโ€ฆfor smaller companies that need to attract talent, often times they hire people into temporary IC roles in order to build toward building a team. And as someone that has previously stepped down my title to take a role, I can tell you (despite what some hiring managers and recruiters might tell you), the current job/title on your resume most definitely limits the positions youโ€™re considered for. So if a company came to me today and asked me to join to lead and build their sales team, but I had to drop back to an AE title because there were no current direct reports, my first thought would be that if the job didnโ€™t work out, Iโ€™d have to work twice as hard to get consideration for roles commensurate with my experience coming off of the IC title.

RSM in my industry almost always seems to be IC. Even National Sales Manager often IC. Director level, step up and would have direct reports.

Some industries go really too far with this... real estate and finserv often have "VP of sales" that are just IC's.
