Can we take a 6 month break without harming our career paths?

Hi there fellow Sales Savages,

I had this discussion about taking a 6 month break to go traveling after the restrictions are lifted.

Personally I have the feeling this is bad for the career path as I just started my sales career for only 3 years.

On the other hand I never had the possibility to go traveling because I had no money for it. No I earned commish and could do such a thing. It feels like this is the only moment in life I could still do this or would be missing out if I did not do it right now.

How do you guys feel about this? Can we do such thing without being set back in our careers?

I think if you can explain in an interview why you took 6 months off you are fine

I don't think a firm "yes" or "no" is the correct answer, but I'd say if you feel like this is important - go for it! The jobs will be there, and you'll be able to work your way back to whatever you would've missed in the 6 months you were gone

If you need time off then take it.ย

What if you took 90 days?ย

I've been trying to sell my wife on this for years! If she'd be down, I would totally do it.

interesting situation. i honestly wouldn't blame you for doing this. if it gets you where you need to be mentally to perform better, i would think about it. i always think those who are well traveled connect with people better so they end up selling better. if you do go, safe travels!

Also, I think if you want to switch things up that's the perfect opportunity to do it. like starting something under you're own name.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Seen people do it. It usually doesn't matter.

Honestly if you're an integral part of the team then wouldn't recommend it. There are other people and processes who would be dependent on you.ย

On the other hand if you're taking 6 months off just for leisure I think its too much. If you're a savage like most of the people here, your mind will keep pulling you back to the game. We love to relax after a big close.

Just my opinion :)

Do it, travel, make memories and ENJOY IT.

6 months is nothing in your career and you will regret it if you don't do it.ย

It's easy to explain in interview, it's massively understandable and if you go somewhere cool they will be interested in hearing about it.ย

Did i say DO IT?!

Ooof this is rough. I mean, women who have children do it all the time. I think it's really about which company you work for and the culture around mental health, illness etc.ย

While there is really nothing wrong with a break, especially if you can explain it well.... to be perfectly honest... as a hiring manager, if I have 2 similar candidates, one has been on a 6mo break, and the other has been doing the job consistently, it's a tough sell to the higher-ups that the candidate on the break is the superior choice. I know its not a popular answer, but its the truth.ย
