Cannabis to SaaS?

CONTEXT: this is for a friend of mine!
I've worked in SaaS since I graduated from college. i live in oregon, and a lot of my local friends from my college town work in the weed industry.

one of my buddies is a great guy. audiophile and music producer, super charismatic and a better sales type than 75% of my teams in SaaS.

he sells OLCC-licensed weed for a local conglomerate right now and he hates it. the market isn't ideal and he's trying to get out of sales, but I really think this guy can create generational wealth for himself if he's in the right place around the right people.

anyone have advice for MJ->SaaS sales?

Industry doesn't matter. That can be taught. Focus on the closing skills.

Transition his knowledge into the SaaS industry for the Devil's lettuce. I'm sure they need new marketing, fintech, whatever and he could tap into something that most aren't willing to.

Other have said it as well, but it bears repeating - skills not industry.

I'm not surprised - in Canada the cannabis industry hasn't been handled the best, and dispensaries are closing left, right and centre. Really a wasted opportunity.

So badly! My partner works for one and the regulations on marketing and sales alone are insufferable

It’s really a shame. We had a great opportunity to establish the gold standard globally and it just all went to shit.

Focus on Skills and Accomplishments, not industry. If you (he) can avoid mentioning Cannabis on the resume, that would be good, at least if the application is to a big company. Small companies might be willing to give him a shot and could be a better place to start.

Not even joking a lot of the big tech companies see weed as the next big industry to sell to. My Svp said it’s the number 1 focus to develop a strategy to.

I would use that to your advantage

I've seen someone transition from Leafly to SMB SaaS in Israel and they still have a really conservative view on consumption. What helped was that she didn't (openly) smoke weed, and she translated the terms into business parlance instead of weed-industry-speak. Do that, and you're good!

If anything I'd say its beneficial. Working in the confines of a heavily regulated industry. Why should it be any different than some one who worked in pharma sales or as a liquor rep for example. The skills are transferable.
