Caught Covid at a Team Outing 1 week ago

Ladies and Gentleman, be careful about meeting up with people especially if you're unvaccinated because I caught covid last week at a company sponsored team outing. Someone at the team outing tested positive for covid the next day.

I have been working remotely in a country where there are no resources for getting the vaccine and I returned two weeks ago to the USA. Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish I would have either returned sooner to the US to get the vaccine, or gotten it immediately after my arrival to the US. As far as I know out of the 10 attendees, I am the only one who has tested positive aside from the originator. My guess is the originator and myself might have been the only unvaccinated people there.

I am not going to lie, part of me hesitating to get the vaccine stemmed from the following:

  • Close friends not getting the vaccine
  • One of my mentors not getting the vaccine
  • All of the media publishing breakthrough cases making me question the vaccine's efficacy

I'm a pretty young and healthy person, so catching covid was a risk I was willing to take. I was also nervous about feeling sick after the vaccine because I had a quota to hit and a lot of other things to do. But honestly, even with mild symptom getting the vaccine sounds like a much better option if I could go back in time. I imagine someone older than me would likely feel symptoms much worse. And now having to isolate for two weeks sucks big hairy monkey balls.

Our company said they will give PTO to those who test positive and need to recover, but I'm also stuck in a room all day so I don't really have much else to do than work. It would be nice if the company gave quota relief this month but I don't expect that from them.

What I learned:

  • I should have taken Covid more serious.
  • The Vaccine does work.
  • Covid sucks if you catch it

TLDR; get the vaccine. Protect yourself and others.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not trying to be a dick. But if it takes roughly 14 days for symptoms to show, and if memory serves to even test positive, how would it have been possible for you to have caught it at that outing 7 days ago? You would have had to have gotten it a week prior.

Again, I've not really looked into any of the new research or anything so I could be wrong.

Great question @SaaSam. Symptoms can actually start to show anywhere from 2 - 14 days after exposure (this is called the incubation period aka from exposure to symptom onset).ย

This is also part of the reason why you don't want to get tested IMMEDIATELY after exposure. You want to go 2-5 days after because the initial results may be false if tested too early.ย

Even vaccinated, you can still be a carrier and spread the virus -- which is why the mask ordinances are starting to make a comeback.ย

(Disclaimer: Clearly I'm not a doctor. But like anyone who has been in an SDR role, I'm very good at research.)

After the exposure of the virus, the company requested we *immediately* get tested the very next day. I'm pretty sure I was the only one who actually waited 5 days. Pretty sus

TLDR says it all. Hope you get well soon, and you should most definitely take the time to tune out from work and recover. Your brain can tell you body to do a lot of strange shit under stress, such as work, and it will prolong your recovery time.

Thanks for the well wishes. I am entitled to a 2 week paid leave and I'm about to start week 2. I was originally going to go back after 1 week but now I'm inclined to take the full 2 weeks. It's nice to tune out, have a proper break and let my body fully heal.ย

Unfortunately this type of story hasn't changed much despite happening over and over and over and over again. There was a post the other week from somebody who was clearly just look to get affirmation for not being vaccinated.

It's dangerous to not be vaccinated and it will remain so.

Completely agree. How long do you think someone should wait to get theย  vaccine after catching the vid? I was thinking within a month, but the CDC recommends 3ย

Solid Advice.
I have an in person company training event scheduled for next week and there will be hundreds of people in attendance. Needless to say I am a little nervous about this.ย
I got Vaxxed back in March, so I am WELL past the two week window, but I am still a little concerned. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it gets cancelled / changed to a remote event sometime later on this week.

We had a similar situation, and our CEO asked everyone if they were vaxed and told those that were not that they would have to stay home. I saw no problem with this, though the ones stuck at home did.

Then they should've gotten vaxxed.

Well...one of them ended up getting COVID so I think both will get the shot at this point.

Your feelings are completely valid. It's not the time to have mandatory in person trainings. Wash your hands often and don't hug people!

Being sick sucks, and costs you money (lost productivity, treatment, drs office, etc).

The vaccine either prevents you from getting sick, or lessens the impact.

The vaccine is free.

Should be pretty easy even for us talkers who can't math to do that Cost/Benefit Analysis.

This is what I fear from the leadership team at my company trying to push to meet in person for quarterly reviews. Not sure why these team outings are so high priority right now given the state of things. I hope you feel better soon!

I feel this as I am also young and healthy and have not taken it very seriously at all. With the new rise in cases I have began to take it more seriously. Hope you feel better and recover well!

I voted Cancun, but I really meant "Riviera Maya" - I prefer the areas south of Cancun like Talum. Maybe this is just cause I'm an old man and the night life/party scene has passed me up though. The area as a whole is delightful.

What do you think? I caught Covid at a company sponsored team outing, I took a two week paid leave to recover and received no quota relief for the month of August.
