CEO carrying some guilt.

Boss offered dude help about 6 years ago after learning he was struggling with substance abuse. Help wasn't considered, much less accepted. Boss ultimately fired him. Dude apparently has now cleaned up. Reached out to boss to ask for a job. Boss asks me to interview dude.

in the spirit of the season, I agree. Of course, I have no fucking choice. So, I send the dude a Zoom invite for 10 AM left coast time today. Dude can't figure out when 10 AM is... or type.

What's the play here?

Eh, to be honest, I didn't have one either when I was recruited into the job I currently have. I had to fly to create one. If he has an updated LI page, I'd use that for now.
HOWEVER - if he wasn't recruited for this role and he applied, he should have been better prepared.
I'm really interested in how he is on a call. Now I'm invested.

He called us. I don't want to be a heartless bastard, but c'mon man, have a resume... at very least. Obviously, he's getting the CEO fast track, but shouldn't abuse it. If I ask him to do something he doesn't feel like doing, will he lean on it later?

A pro would be cognizant of the road he's on and, even if he doesn't give a fuck because he's got the boss' blessing, should act like he respects it.

Gut checking myself on this. I really would like to talk to him. There's something of a human experiment here. I also won't disqualify him because of the past. I don't think that's fair. People do get their shit together. They get sober. They quit gambling. They grow up. But this is a train wreck from the start.

Given that he reached out to the CEO and not the other way around, definitely a red flag.

That being said, you should still talk to him. Be fair but TOUGH. Go with your gut and stand behind any decision you make.

Also - make sure he's on cam so you can see how together he is and, most importantly, report back!

where the hell is this guy at 7 am that he won't be home in time to take 15-20 mins to update his resume... I would reinforce the necessity of having it beforehand.

"Hey, I understand you may cut it close, but the company requires a resume submitted before or during the interview. Is there a way that you can get it to me in the next hour?"
You are totally right on raising the standard and getting the basic things done to start with. Or else this character trait will run rampant if moved forward against your better judgement.

I told him to send me a resume first before we talk, that I have a process to follow. He agreed. Can't find him on LinkedIn. This one is going up in smoke fast. He wants to talk, he can get his resume current. If he can't do that, I have my answer and can justify it.
That's the play for today. Will update if he climbs out of the hole.

Reminds me of when a guy called our sales line to ask for my manager. Manager wasn’t in. He said he was looking for a sales job and wanted to get in touch. Okay no problem, here’s their email. Dude STRUGGLED to take down a short email address over the phone. That’s actually a pretty basic function you need for a sales job!

I believe a good practice is to alway have your resume uupdated no matter if you're employed or unemployed.

Always look at it and tweak the the wording to fit current rhetoric in the industry you are trying to get into. Never let your resume collect dust.
Good call in rescheduling.
