Chances????? Should people in sales always have the opportunity to be on a performance plan before being let go?

No. Sometimes it’s completely obvious it’s not going to work out and it’s inefficient and irresponsible to extend the relationship further.

I guess if you’re being told you’re doing a great job in one way and then with no notice or communication that your job is in jeopardy and then being let go out of the blue. Should there be more communication to fix something you didn’t know was wrong?

Why don't you just tell us what happened, instead of characterizing?

Chances of what? I feel like half the time, a PIP is a clue to start looking around elsewhere

Well, we have these "quota" things in sales. Are you hitting yours? You're probably good. Are you not hitting yours? Then it might not be good.

Does your company offer a PIP? Some do not, and would rather fire fast than let a dying fish languish in shallow waters.

We need context. Being told you're doing a great job and being let go out of the blue tells me you may need help connecting the dots.

Meant details about what happened.   You said you were being told you were doing a great job.  By whom, and in what context?  Then you got let go out of the blue - any reason given?  Part of a mass layoff?  What?

No context, no help. That's how this place works.

Edit: read your context.

I started a new position the beginning of Sept and since day 1 I heard nothing but good things, positive reinforcement that I was doing great and then Dec. 7 after working all day I had a 1 on 1 with my boss at 4 and she comes and gets me asking how my day was and as were walking we start getting closer to hr and as we get near the doors my boss says, we’ll this is always an uncomfortable walk and I froze and was like are you kidding me!!! She says it will be explained when we sit down with hr. We sit and and my boss says, you have everything it takes to be amazing at this job but unfortunately we have to cut this partnership and gets up and walks out. Hr just gives me the paper that explains how I will get paid for the week and any commissions and that was it, no explanation and that was it. I then had to walk back into the office pack my stuff and walk out in front of everyone. Extremely embarrassing. Thoughts?

Thoughts: This company isn't worth your energy or thought. Sorry that this happened to you, but you're dodging a bullet here.

Thanks for the expansion of the story.

I'm sorry that happened.  A straight reason from your manager would have been helpful to you.

One thing you left out:  how were your numbers?  You mention you got nothing but positive reinforcement, but were you hitting your quota?  If you weren't, is this why you were expecting a PIP?

As a manager, every one of my reports understands how they are doing at all times.  When I do have to let someone go, they can typically see it coming and thank me for the continual feedback and support throughout their tenure.  I do provide positive feedback constantly, but I also have difficult conversations about why they aren't meeting their expectations, ie. quota.  I think it was a disservice from your former manager to not tell you that you weren't meeting her expectations of you, but you should have also realized I am not meeting my quota, and had a difficult conversation with her about what you can change to meet your quota.

A PIP is designed for people who organizations feel can make an improvement to be successful.  You'd been there 3 months.  There are multiple sides to this story.  Have they given you enough time to be successful? - three months is a short time.  Or maybe they weren't seeing the motivation and cut bait.  I don't know the whole story.

I've seen people fired no PIP. Sometimes, someone is just a truly terrible fit. Pretty rare though. It's in your manager's interest for you to succeed.

Ouch, sorry friend. Im going out on a limb here but you’re better off. Many states have a 90 day rule to let go of anyone at anytime for any reason without cause. You maybe in one of those states. It could be budget cuts, it could be a number of reasons outside of your control. Im curious to know what expectation you were given or that was set for your first 90 days. If there wasnt any progress towards that goal thag could be why. But, the non chalant, almost joking with you before they let you go is pretty shit. Letting go of anyone for any reason is hard, espicially before the holidays and if they act as they couldn’t care and then tell you you’re great is messed up. Good for you for keeping yoor coo!

That sucks man. Hey, a majority of sales people get fired at some point in their career. That's not true in most professions, so non sales people may not understand, but don't sweat it. But yeah to echo the other people, I am assuming since you haven't addressed the question several times that you were missing your quota. Is that correct?

If so, was this never spoken about between you and your manager? If that's the case, yes it probably is logical for you to lose your job but no, they did not do it in a professional way.

Unfortunately, some managers suck same as some reps suck. You should have had an idea that this was coming. Hard to tell from your comments if the fact that you didn't is on you, or on her

There was no quota. The first 3 months were guaranteed and I was coming up on 90 days.

What do you mean "there was no quota". At all, across the sales team? Just for those 3 months? Something else?

Assuming that you mean for the first three months, generally speaking how was your performance actually closing business compared to the rest of the team and to their expectations?

I have never seen a performance plan work. The rep has either been fired or they have left before the PIP timeline ended and gone on to greener pastures.

It happens. But in sales the writing is pretty much on the wall when you log into SFDC and see your name at the bottom of the dash in most categories

It depends. Is the person putting in the effort and just needs some skill refinement? Or are they sitting around not doing any work and just expecting deals to flow in. If someone is willing to put in the work then why not try coaching them to success.
