Some have mentioned previously that they enjoy a cigar (celebratory or otherwise)

Enjoy them? Hate them? What’s in your humidor?

Personally, I have a mix. Dominicans, domestics from Tampa, and some just outside of FL :) Ashton cabinets and Rocky 10’s for gatherings, then some H Upmann’s for celebrations. Currently enjoying a short filler Quintero favorito.

I don't smoke them but I have on an occasion or two. I am here to learn. 🥂

Considering how much you grill/cook I’m surprised! A cigar plus some nice whiskey is a great combo whenever I’m grilling/smoking something fancy

Oh there's evidence out there in the wild...on my bbq team page and IG for sure...I just don't know enough about them to have a classy conversation.

Let me circle back with you on this - no need to boil the ocean. Let’s think outside the box and take it offline so we can see eye to eye for a win-win.

Best advice I can give -

1. start simple. Try a couple different wrapper types. personally, I can’t do a Connecticut wrapper. Too spicy and leaves me breathing fire the next day. Deeper browns into maduro for me.

2. don’t blow the bank the first few times. Keep it under $10 a stick in general. Tons of options under that price.

3. don’t get crazy with pairing. If you have a certain beverage you enjoy, find a few that match. But I’d recommend starting with water.

4. Don’t buy massively long cigars! Most of the time you’re not going to finish it, or if you hate it you’re wasting money.

5. There are TONS of cigars out there. Just because something has a poor/high rating doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it. Some of my favorite smokes (that I’ve gotten compliments when shared) are $2 Cubans.

Any non-booze recommended beverage pairings?

I stopped drinking the second week in January and like where the momentum's taken me. Always smoked cigars with good rum or whiskey and it's been years, but headed out of town for a week to the beach and thought of picking up some cigars.

I've heard coffee recommended and definitely gotten down on some nicotine and java but don't ever recall drinking coffee with a cigar.

Absolutely go with coffee. Personally, I go with an espresso or cappuccino, but any coffee works!

Outside of coffee or water, I wouldn’t do anything with heavy acidity or too much carbonation.

Thanks for the advice. Mind sharing the brand of those $2 cubans?

Dominicans are as good as anything you can get. Romeo y Julieta are some of my favorite. They’re a huge brand in Cuba but also make cigars in the DR. Should be able to find them in most shops.

Played golf with them in Florida. Just shoot a text and a box arrives in a few days. Amazing stuff. Nicaraguan all day.

I only smoke Dominicans when I do indulge in cigars. For the noobs in the thread, Often, cigars are a lot like beer in the sense that darker wrap = heavier, lighter wrap = lighter. There are even some “champagne” cigars that come out of Connecticut iirc. (Good for the golf course when you’re not with fellow cigar brethren) My go to is any Dominican robusto with a thick smoke and a glass of scotch or a dark porter with Hershey’s kisses. Yum

Anyone ever try a Gurkha Ghost? Pretty legit, in my opinion.

I enjoy a nice Cuban on a special occasion, but tend to opt for smaller ones. As nice as it is to smoke a fat stogie, it takes so damn long and I find there are diminishing returns on enjoyment.

Great to be in Canada and have access :D

Definitely nice!

I agree. I prefer a bigger ring gauge with a smaller overall length. Puns to follow I’m sure :P

HA! Too easy.

Haven't seen many of those, TBH, but sounds nice. I do like some girth...

Advice for someone who's been hesitant in the past to ask "Where do I start?"... ? The missus tells me to just buy a box of Cubans but I'm not sure if that's just good marketing?

I've had plenty at weddings that I have enjoyed, but never purchased myself.

You definitely can, but the issue is if you don’t like them, you’re stuck with an entire box. I would start with individuals until you’ve had a few different types. Several online cigar shops (not endorsing any) will have mix packs you can try out. I would start there.

May I ask what is a good one for a beginner?

I know you need a good lighter and cutter etc so am I better of finding someone to leech from?

Fancy cutters and lighters are a flex more than anything. Head over to Amazon and buy 5 torch lighters for under 10 bucks. No need to break the bank. Same goes for a cutter. Buy a cheap one and when you break it get a new one. Or buy more cheap units :) If you’re new, I’d suggest a Nub top 10 sampler. Cigars are small in length (4”) but pack a good ring gauge (circumference). Run you about $5 a cigar.

As far as cutter styles (single blade, V blade, punch, etc etc)… go with a plastic single. You’re not going to realize a difference at first. Clean cut, clean light. Those are key. Punches are great for a smaller gauge if you don’t want to hack up the wrapper, or to keep on a key ring.

Just the response I needed. We don't have amazon in denmark, however I have colleagues coming over from the UK and may go back soon, if my recovery keeps going in the right direction

Recently started smoking them a bit more often so I'm new in this but my favorite so far was an H Upmann. Truly enjoyed it.
