"Closer for Hire"

Context: A friend of mine moved to NYC last year and was trying to get hired in a sales role for the first time. His background is as an engineer/cofounder of a medical device company that sold the device he developed himself. He ended up selling the patent/company, and wanted to make the pivot I mentioned.

The market being what it is, he was having trouble finding a role. Recently, he started up a new "personal brand" Instagram page labeling himself a "Sales Closer." Mind you, the guy has no sales experience outside of his founder role. **EDIT** He's been a Sales Engineer for a little under a year.

His first post was a black and white portrait of him in a nice suit pretending to be on a call. The only likes are pictured:

Seems he's fallen in with a group of these self described "Sales Closers." Checked one of their profiles, and it was all similar pictures to what my friend posted with a bio claiming to be a "High Ticket Closer" with 750k in contracts closed. I'm immediately skeptical, because if you're closing "high ticket" deals in NYC, 750k would be like... One deal.

Has my friend gotten involved with a group of grifters? What are your thoughts on independent "Sales Closers" for hire? Should I express to him my worries?

Is being an independent "Sales Closer" a viable gig?

This is what we call a "clout chaser" or a "bullshit artist". He fell into a hive, and they are all going to run around in circles liking each other's shit.

I get the ads for this type of thing on YouTube, semi-regularly. The guy in the ad always references how he works with guys like Tai Lopez and people of that ilk. Doesn't strike me as a legitimate career plan.

Changing my @ - what a bunch of shit. We all gotta try but it may be time for an intervention. Can we get his family in a room?

Looks like he's entering "bro culture". Did he make a bunch of money off selling the patent/company? If so, they will get him to spend it all on them and their lifestyle.

And "Closer for Hire" to means nothing. Actually less than nothing because it like the guy who can only perform once the ball is on the 1 yard line. Sure he puts up points, but it was EVERYONE ELSE who actually did the work. Any schmuck can push a ball 1 yard.

He's a sales closer but the only thing he's closed was the product he created? (which tbh is very cool).

Is he expecting this to lead to employment opportunities?

Turns out he's actually working as a Sales Engineer for a startup there, so not totally without experience.

But that’s not a closing role. Critical, but I can’t tell you how many times my SCs have told me how grateful they are to not have to deal with the contract and terms as they peel off once the demos are done.

I see alot of these ads as "closers" on Ig. I do some research on these people and they have no metrics other than made-up bs of "Closed5/6 figure deals at Hustlers only university" and graduated from Devry University.

I'm not knocking not going to school, but it's always the people with the most made up shit targeting people on ig as "closers".

Always confused by what the end goal is for those sorts of accounts. Surely they don't actually expect to get an opportunity from it

Yeah, whenever I see this sort of stuff the only thing I think is either extremely junior, or are just flat out exaggerating / lying.

Maybe there are all-stars out there that can just plug / play in an org as a “closer for hire” and sell enterprise level deals but it ain’t the guys you see on IG I know that much lol.

And idk imo 750K in TCV isn’t high tickets that’s like SMB/MM depending on the product and industry.

What you need to do is simple. Show him this post, let him read the comments from actual sales people with eons of experience.

If he still wants to still be that way, then you've done everything you can besides hiring trained racoon ninjas to take out the people he's talking to.
