Coaching: How does it work in your org/team?

Hi Savages!

Idk if its just me, but I've been seeing a rise in "coaching cause I have to" processes rather than "coaching because I care/can/should" and almost always the perspective towards coaching for performance is (-).

Makes me wonder how "coachees" perceive these moments and how prepared and authentic coaches really are?

Do you even receive coaching from your leadership?

Once you're no longer a rookie, we don't have dedicated coaching sessions just for the sake of having them.ย

Coaching happens when:ย

- one off issues come up and we bring them up with our manager for assistance during account review/1x1s

- we proactively notice a weakness in ourselves and ask our manager to work on it with us during 1x1s

- management notices an area we're struggling with and makes a plan to work on it with us during 1x1s

I like the method. I wouldn't want to be randomly coached or forced to bring something I want to work on to the table constantly.

Appreciate the thoughtful answer @funcoupons. Very proactive on your end! Would you say the effectiveness of the coaching is something that's observed or is the responsibility solely placed on you after someone "coaches" you?

Our coaching is very similar to what I would imagine a dictator yelling at their reports would be like

In my experience, most reps see required coaching sessions to be a waste of their time that could be better spent prospecting or following up with customers. For new or struggling reps it makes sense, but requiring coaching for everyone is a good way to annoy your team
