Cold calling will never be dead.

The reliance on this method as a means of prospecting will perpetually fluctuate but the moment that the sales domain at large declare that cold calling is dead is the moment you should start making more dials so that you can differentiate yourself from the pack.

Cold calling will always be a super important skill, that being said I do believe the landscape has changed making it more and more difficult. Even when I started as a BDR 6/7 years ago I could do call blitz's and as tough as it was you absolutely could be walking away with new meetings. Today it definitely feels different. For example, if someone was trying to get my company as a client theres nobody to call- the only people that have desk lines are the BDR's so that leaves cell phones which are very tough to get and then its a totally flip of a coin that someone would engage totally cold on their cell phone and not get pissed off. Toss in COVID and everyone working from home I'm not sure how folks are still finding success.

In my mind it comes down to what's the ROI of your time for this method? As a Rep who's also very busy with active deals I can't commit to multiple hundreds of cold calls a week. As an analogy if considered the same return on your 401K would a 2-3% return be worth it? TIme will tell

Only people who are afraid of cold calls/bad at cold calls/have never made a cold call in their lives will declare that it's dead.

It's definitely alive but I wouldn't say "alive and well".....One major challenge is companies have made it extremely tough to even get through to your "buyer" direct lines.  In the past you could just "0" out and ask for an operator but now (especially in tech companies) they have automated the phones to just be "press one for accounting, press 2 for sales, press 3 for...."

A couple years ago you could find a lot more gatekeepers to at least try to get past.  Now its harder to even catch a gate keeper live.
