I started learning the Spanish language at the age of 20.
In the beginning it sucked. I never wanted to speak because I was afraid of messing up, I knew my accent was terrible, I often got stuck because I didn't know a certain word that was crucial to whatever conversation I was having and would sit there like an idiot playing charades.
One day I was venting on the phone to my dad and his words were, "why do you give a shit if you mess up? It's not your native language, you're barely learning it. Nobody expects you to speak perfectly and if they do, fuck 'em, you shouldn't care what others think."
So I started speaking more and the more I spoke the better I got, the more words I learned and the more my accent improved. I'm fluent now, I would say I got fluent in about a year and a half. Was able to hold a conversation with relative ease in about 4 months.
Cold calling is exactly the same. When you get started you are going to fuck it up, you're going to feel and sound awkward. If you let that discourage you from doing it you'll always suck.
Best way to get good at it is to hit it hard, hit it often, and embrace the fact that you'll mess up. You may learn to love it and the more you do it the more "fluent" you'll become.
