Cold-calling SMB manager?

what's up savages

I've been at a Series A for 6-9 months and am getting burnt out. Love the people there but it's quickly become a place where management gets off on activity metrics and don't devote any time to development (and offer no clear path to promotion - have a couple SDRs who have already closed deals and they couldn't tell you when they'll move up).

In the interest of my career (and sanity) I want to look elsewhere. You know the shtick - SMB AE jobs look for a minimum of 1yr experience but I'm confident I have the skills. I've listened to every Gong call we have, I compiled best practices and resources for other SDRs to learn from, I've created strategy for breaking into accounts (we were given lists and told "go get 'em tiger!").

I found a few companies I want to target but I wanted to get some insights on what people think is the best way of approaching SMB managers / TAs. Cold-call? Email? How much am I pitching on this initial outreach? I'm not worried not send out a few feelers and I think I have a good idea of what to include but I worked in another field prior so this specific kind of outreach feels different and I don't want to make myself look like a baboon.

Peace & love & bless anyone who read all this shit.

Am I overthinking this?

I think as long as you arent doing a huge cadence reaching out to these managers, doing outreach would be appreciated. Ideally write about how you meet the requirements on the job description.

This is what has worked for me:
1. once you find the person you want to meet with just send them a DM on linked in
"Hey Candi I saw your the ___ at ___. I have been following the company and I am really interested in joining the company would you be open to chatting on the phone for 10 minutes? i was hoping to ask a few questions and get some feedback from you"

if they dont get back to you, wait like 3 days. then send them an email (im sure you can figure that out)
- mention you sent them a LInked in Message and you can pretty much repeat it via email.

then I would wait 4 more days and send them one more message. if they dont respond find someone new to talk too

if you get any more aggressive it becomes desperate and your not desperate.

I don't think I'd call you a bitch, but I would suggest to not overcomplicate or overthink things.

Don't overthink it. You want a new role, go after it. However you reach out to the hiring managers at the companies you're targeting will be fine. They are looking for candidates, so they're anticipating outreach and should be open to it. LI works, email, phone - and yes, in every touch point, you are selling yourself. You're introducing yourself, expressing interest in the role, and you'd like to learn about it and more about what they're looking for in their next hire - and then you get to tell them why that should be you.

an SMB manager will care about how likely you are to help them hit their team target. HR and a hiring manager will care about your experience.

Reaching out to them will help you get past the HR and hiring manager requirements. Show the SMB manager that you're ready to do this. treat it like a sales cycle

Your outreach is functionally an interview so make sure you're on point!
