Commission only job or not?

so I am interviewing for a position that is Commission only. here are the details:

car allowance ($500/mth) if u hit a specific target (eventually will have company vehicle)
8% of sale if signed up during visit 4% if signed within 3 days
1-2 calls per day within 1-1.5 hours of home base
4 days on the road, 1 day for training/review
pay range is $80k-$120k /year
Construction Industry focused on basement repair/waterproofing.

I've never worked commission only and am the only income source so concerned about consistent pay

what do you think?

Everyone's situation is different. I personally need the guarantee in base. I would only do 100% commish for a side gig since I wouldnt want that much risk to go a month or two months making $0.

I would highly recommend back channeling to find what the Medium pay is and the low end. How many reps aren't making anything?

If you are a bad ass sales rep, in a very secure financial situation, amazing product, and all reps are making money. Sure go for it. But I dont think I will ever do one

This is good advice. Definitely back channel on the reality of the compensation that’s been presented.

I too need the stability of a base, but I work in a completely different industry.

If I was working in the SF Bay Area right now though … there are a lot of homeowners looking for these services right now after the record storms.

The only way I would even consider this job is under the following circumstances

- I am financially ok for the next 9 months

- They have more than 2 people that are magically made up that are achieving quota and earning the money they say is possible and they verify it

- They have reps doing this that are tenured for more the 6 months, you could easily be walking into a chop shop and go back to square 1

- Last but certainly not least I need to drop any ego at the door and have the thickest of skin because on top of people likely slamming the door in your face and getting told no the construction industry is breeding ground for total scum who will treat you lower than dirt.

I did 100% commission for almost 5 years and I’ll never do it again.

There are WAY too many good paying salaries jobs that provide good stability and upside for me to ever pursue commission only

I guess it depends on the quality of the leads they provide you. Have you spoken with any current reps?

I would not do it. However, I can imagine there are people who do not mind the pay fluctuations.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to cancel the upcoming interview. I’ve always had salary jobs and am concerned financially right now. I’m getting by on unemployment but that is going to stop in a couple of months.

Depends on where you are in life. First job, living with parents? Go for it. Got a house, family etc to support, seems risky.

I'm a bit of a snob but it's my opinion that any company that won't pay you some kind of base salary does not have a viable enough product or business to do so - less a few grandfathered industries like RE or insurance or whatever.

I've worked at commission only jobs for brief stints. Surrounded by a lot of broke people with bad attitudes - it gets contagious. It's worth it to find a company that invests in their reps

Even though the economics are a bit hazy, there is still a glut of SaaS/inside sales roles that would pay within that range, providing consistent pay without having to be on the road.

Regardless, you need to backchannel but I'd personally shy away.

Bro, I've battled this question for over 20 years in sales and have come to realize I have way too much to offer for a commission only gig.... Also there is something to be said that both parties should have skin in the game. See if a draw vs. Commission is an option. Good Luck brother
