Commission Rate or Commission Rape

About to close the biggest deal I've ever negotiated. I've been working on this deal since last summer and it's on track to close in a couple of weeks. Despite standing on my Managers desk, the CEO has decided to cut back on commission rates for everyone this year. From 10% to 5%.

Anyone else been screwed in a similar way?

Nothing surprises me anymore. Just rejoined an old company who is an established industry leader. They still haven’t gotten out comp plans for the year that start Jan 1. Their new CPQ system is so messed up even if they had plans they couldn’t calculate the commissions to pay anyone so they’re doing draws based on estimates 🤯

Doesn’t necessarily affect me so as long as my checks come in at the right size I don’t care. Gonna be really shitty for some reps though when they get clawed back because their draw was greater than what they should have earned.

Usually a company will give out outrageous commission rates to get the ball rolling and then roll the rates back to something less.

I’m sorry. That’s rough. I’ve been the victim of the “big deal” clause before. That’s where management can make an arbitrary commission up if the deal is deemed large. The best you can do is hope your manager goes to bat to negotiate a better %.

Not a lot you can do here. Maybe can you use your deal to negotiate higher base or OTE?

If my company did this to me I would walk. I realise not everyone can afford to, but I'm a stickler (some might say a stubborn f*cker) when it comes to this sort of thing. If this is the first time they have screwed you over, then decide what your "kill criteria" are. At the very least draw a line in the sand and start looking at other options so you are in a position to tell them where to shove it the next time they (or your next employer) trys to pull a fast one.

all the time and somehow the bigger the deal the more you get fucked (or cucked). If i was you, and it's easier to say than do, I would go into your manager and ask him why you shouldnt fuck this deal now that you've been raw dogged? Ask him what he would think of bubba coming up behind him in a shower with no warning?

I am petty and I have been known to tell a prospect that my team/boss sucks - go elsewhere.

I fuckin love that line. Like oh yes of course CEO obviously I dragged my fucking heels on this deal. @DataWrangler just ask your senior leaders “so if the commission rate is dropping by 50% I would assume my base is increasing by 50%”
