Comp Change-Any Advice?

Hey Y'all

I work with a small company that's HQ'd in Europe. They haven't really gotten on the ARR train in Europe the sameway that the USA has, so my comp was based on TCV and not ACV.

Last year, Germany and the USA couldn't come to an agreement on a STIP, so we all agreed that I would be paid under the original contract. It didn't end up mattering, as I only sold perpetual licenses last year and not any subscriptions.

I've got a PO coming in at the end of the month that's supposed to give me a BIG check. The biggest of my career. Partially because it's based on a five year subscription, expanding to another location from a deal done in 2023.

When I asked my boss about the STIP plans for this year, he was flustered, and talked about how "we need to what's best for the company... some of those decisions weren't sustainable business models." He also aluded to a strategic account that he's yet to give to me (the only tenured AE left under his watch) saying that he hasn't taken any commission on that account for the good of the company. He couldn't tell me how the commission structure was changing but set a meeting for two weeks to discuss it and my coming promotion that was already in the works.

All signs point to me being screwed out of the biggest commission check of my career. I've started looking for other positions, but is there anything I can do? It's my first time actively being screwed out of a commission check.

Are you based in the US?
Do you have a comp plan that is in writing and signed?

If yes to both of those then this โ€œfor the good of the companyโ€ nonsense is illegal.

The comp structure gets changed all the time but if it wasn't before you earned your commish then it shouldn't be imposed.

Do you own the company? No! You deserve to be paid for your work. The company will do good regardless.

The STIP expires at the end of the year, and I don't have one for this year yet.

Honestly it might not matter. It this deal closes you would be paid on the last deal that was in place. They canโ€™t just move the goal posts.

If they really try to hold back funds with this nonsense you need to start working with Dan Goodman.

Comp changesโ€ฆoften.

That said, your boss is just spewing forth the company line as dictated by people who are not in sales. Whenever someone says that you need to do something for the good of the company, what they mean is they donโ€™t want to pay you Because they have sales envy.

Now that you know that, you need to make a choice about whether you want to stay there, or go to somewhere which appreciates sales peoples efforts
