Company Card vs Reimbursements

Would you rather have a company card and all expenses just go straight there or use your own card and get reimbursements?

I'm torn. Obviously the company card is great because of convenience and you never have to wait on getting that money back, but at the same time, using my personal card for business expenses gets me tonnns of points/SkyMiles.

I always prefer using my own card. Ive flown to Japan 3x in first class on points, a lot of which were earned via travel spend for work and reimbursed. Not even close in my mind if you know how the credit card/points game works.ย

Kyoto is an absolute must, my favorite city in Japan. Rented electric bike and rode all over the place, best way to see everything IMO.

I have also done a couple ski trips in Hokkaido and they are pretty hard to beat. Fiance and I rented a small RV and just chased storms all over Northern Japan skiing and that will probably go down as the greatest trip I have ever taken. It was an amazing way to see the country. Furano was my favorite town and area we skied, for any avid skier I highly recommend.ย

Thatโ€™s amazing! I donโ€™t have *quite* that many points yet, but am well on my way with how many work trips Iโ€™ve been taking recently!

Just got my first company card, but I love reimbursement.

Paid for so much of my honeymoon/elopement trip on points from business travel.ย

I have had both experiences.ย

I would MUCH rather use my own card. I get way more personal benefit from this.ย

BUT my wife loves that I have a company card now because i never have to expense anything.ย

I would always forget to do this and get reimbursed late haha

I loved the convenience of the company card, but am currently using my own and then getting reimbursed.ย  Miles + points are pretty sweet to make up for the inconvenience.

I love using my own cars for the status and rewards. I haven't had an issue in the 10 years Iโ€™ve been doing it.

Thatโ€™s really good to hear! I havenโ€™t had any issues at my company either, but there has been a few instances where my husband has had to submit receipts multiple times before getting reimbursed.

If your credit is good then fuck company cards and get a card that gets you status and points/miles etc

If your credit sucks and have a shitty CC then , go corp card. Not like you have a choice anyway if this is your situation โ€ฆ bright side is your expenses are a tad easier. But having your solid CC card worry points/miles far outweighs these boring perks.

Counter argument here, if you got a shitty credit rating and you do have business expenses, put them through your personal card as long as you are reimbursed in time to keep the level down/below limit.ย  I did that previously, secured myself an excellent credit rating and a HUGE credit limit on my CC from pretty much just business expenditure.ย  That said I was careful with my credit everywhere else but the high amount of money transacting through the card and being paid back in a timely manner went a long way.

I was conflicted when I was in a sales role that gave me a company card. On my business trips I got per diem based on where I was and if I used my personal card I have to keep all my receipts but I got the points. If I used company card I just clicked a box that said company card for each meal and it was easier when doing expense reports, especially if a longer trip.

Figure out which works best for you!

Difficult one, I have always preferred going the reimbursement route, mainly for the points as many have commented here as they go a long way.

However the issue I had was being relatively new to the country and with little credit history, when you start hitting $10k+ monthly expenses which I do every month, it can get difficult to float that on your card.ย ย

Also I found I missed out here and there on small transactions where I struggled to differentiate whether they were mine or not and earlier in a previous job, for years I missed out on foreign transaction fees without realizing which would have totaled up to well over $1000 over a course of a year.ย  I did artificially inflate all foreign transaction fees after I realized that to try recoup.ย

So its a mixed answer, I like the points but I dont like losing money.

Have a company card and you can link it to your personal points on Amex for like $80 a year. I expense that $80 every year an no one bats an eye.
