Company Athletic Events - How hard do you go?

In a month I am headed to Mexico with my company for a little get together/retreat.

They are planning a beach olympics for one of the evenings. Ive played sports my entire life, think of myself as a decent athlete and am pretty competitive but dont want to be that asshole at these events. In these situations I try and go slightly less hard than the top exec there (similar to the drinking rule, have 1 less than the top exec there).

I am curious how the group goes about these situations?

How hard do you go at company athletic events?

I'm not an Olympian but I'm not pathetic in sports either. I'm more of a fan of drinking the beer and eating the snaccs but I won't embarrass anyone in the hotel or on my team.

As soon as the men start getting aggro as fuck like they're competing in the Super Bowl is when I'm out. My face is too precious to be damaged by flying balls (lol) or an elbow to the nose.

Lol “lighthearted” athletic events have sent someone to the hospital at least once in my company. When things start to get that heated you’ll find my ass at the snack table.

As a man that shit bugs me too...

I had a director at an old company not talk to me for weeks because I won an axe throwing competition and his former NCAA baseball playing self couldn't handle the blow to the ego.

Exactly. I rolled my ankle when I was six. Was never the same after that. Definitely would be sittin on a million dollar contract if it wasnt for that

We’re all wannabe athletes.. most of my favourite athletes make more in a month than I’ve made in career earnings..

I picked the first option but in reality, it’s kind of a mix of all three. I want to assert myself as a capable participant all while not taking things too seriously and have a good time.

If it's softball, I'll crush.  Bowling, nah.  Go Karts - all the way.  Depends on the sport and who's playing, TBH.

I’m the least competitive person ever, weird that I’m in sales but just go with it. I’m kinda just here to network and drink

Actions speak louder than words. I like to sit back and just compete. If people call on me to do stuff, I'll do it without hesitation, but I won't outwardly tout my athleticism. You know you did well if someone asks, "did you play sports in college?"

I want to say balls to the walls but I really feel it depends how sensitive your coworkers are. Will Janice from marketing cry if she gets a spike to the face??
If so, try hard but don't try to destroy them.

If its marketing then its absolutely balls to the walls, gotta make sure they understand at all times that they provide zero value.
