Compensation, Let's Talk. **DISCUSSION**

War Room, let's discuss compensation.

I've read many comments from people feeling underpaid, or looking for new jobs..

Some of us less seasoned salespeople may not know what we're worth.

Can you share your compensation with the rest of us? Compensation history at past jobs?

Hopefully this can serve as an open discussion, and help any other who may be feeling like me (potentially underpaid and not sure what I'm worth) find some peace.

I'll start..

..my first sales job (Industrial, outside, b2b) I made 75k out of college.

Now I have an OTE of 125k in a new territory. Medical, outside, b2b. In this role, a few years down the road, I expect an OTE of 180k before I'm 30.

Is this good? Shit? Could do better? Where are the peeps making 200/200 at?

They started at 50k at first , I said no and negotiated the 10k bump with market rate data, their funding, my past metrics. Hoping to get to 80k base in the next year or two. Trying to pump these numbers up.ย

Also, always make sure your boss has a mutually agreed upon timeline for your reviews and pay raises. Negotiate the metrics you need to hit in advance. That way there are not guessing games in the future. Good shit getting your $10k bump from the get go

Unfortunately my current company plays games when it comes to quota numbers. It's always a range vs a definitive number which I hate, so metrics are always floating around. The good part is the industry I'm in is booming so a lot of similar companies are hiring. The way I see it, switching to a competitor a year or two down the line makes more sense in terms of a pay bump vs staying where I'm at. Our company essentially poached all our competitors our of the gate, so let's see what happens.ย

My quota is a lot higher than my peers since I've hit over 100% each month, so it's a double edged sword since they adjust my quota range which is bs. I likely will down the line if they continue doing it.ย

I got lucky with the company. Although Iย  had to negotiate, but I knew I leaving money on if I didn't since they recently raised some fat funding. You might be underpaid tbh, have you seen the 2021 comp guide by Betts for SMB AEs in the bay?ย

100% I know I'm underpaid. Just got bumped up to AE and still ramping. Luckily, it's 80% inbound and some prospecting to hit quota.ย

Our accelerators are 4x though so I'm hoping my Q4 performance will be good enough to make up for it.ย ย

I've always had my roles in the rocky mountains and even with the high standard of living here, comp plans have never correlated.

1st Sales Job
30k base - 7% trail + 10% of upsells in year 1. in office. basic health & dental bennies.

2nd Sales Job
55k base - 15% of print ads sold, 7% of digital, 35% of events sold. half in office, half remote. no bennies.

3rd Sales Job
55k base - up to 10k bonus per quarter if 100% to goal. in office. no bennies.

4th sales Job
108k base - unlimited PTO, 5k cash option up to twice year on 'accrued' pto, 3% 401k match, 8% equity w cash out option at any time, health & dental bennies w 75% paid for by company, 20k annual bonus. in office.

hope that helps.

Since I've worked in tech:

1st AE role - $140k OTE on a CV 50/50. With equity (now worth $50k+ since IPO) and the typical slew of full benefits in SaaS. Stayed in this role for almost two years.ย

2nd Role - $100k base, $5k signing bonus, uncapped commission (OTE $165k) + additional bonus (1%) on "super quota."
Fully paid medical dental vision for my family and I. And negotiated 10% base salary raise annually each year for the first 5 years continent on hitting Quota.ย

Filthy Canadian here, paid in filthy Canadian $. In USD $105K base. INSANE commission plan of 5% gross ACV - which is why I accepted a lower base. 1% equity. OTE without calculating for equity value between $175K -300K USD. Title and massive base raises tied to KPIs in my offer. Reviews at 3/6/9/12 months.

Enterprise AE
Enterprise SDR at a startup. I live in CA but they are based in NYC. 100% remote permanently. $70k base, $110k OTE, annual bonus up to $30k. Might be moving into the AE role in September. I believe the base is $80-90k and OTE is $220-$230k. We have a stupid amount of funding. Not exactly sure how much bc itโ€™s private but I know I hit the jackpot here.

Background- Tech Sales- Rocky Mountains

1st job- Outbound BDR: $75k OTE (66/33 split)

2nd job- AE: $100k OTE (50/50 split), grew to $140k by the time I left 2 years later

3rd job (current)- AE: $170k OTE (60/40 split)

Timeline starts as college grad in 2017

Hope this is helpful- my advice, if a better offer comes your way, take it. The company will do whatโ€™s right for the company 100% of the time with your needs as an afterthought, so youโ€™ve gotta do whatโ€™s right for you and your family.ย

Company out of Michigan, I live on east coast (literally 10 min from beach).ย

Base is $45,000 with OTE of $100,000. 3% match, minimal health/dental/vision.ย

Nothing crazy, but culture is elite, I work remote, tremendous support from HQ and ball is in my court to make more money.

Just joined last year so still a bit in acclimation phase but looking promising to blow goal out of water.ย

As much as I'd love to find a base of $100k with OTE $200k+, we live minimally and don't need much. Maybe one day!

I am 1.5 years in at a staffing firm $50k base, $10k salary increase if you hit your numbers (by quarter) + uncapped commission. Will be close to $80k this year, $100k+ next year. Based on this thread though Iโ€™m thinking I need to start exploring new opportunities where I am paid closer to my worth. California-based

Not sure how old you are right now (meaning how far you're from 30), but I do think you can get 200K ote, given the right role, in the right company/industry/location. B2B, software, national / global accounts, based of SFO should pay that. Check glassdoor.com!
