If the competitor is stable. he should negotiate another 10%, then take that deal immediately, if not sooner. Sure, they may be sniffing around, but if the offer shows up he just doubled his income by going across the street. Who wouldn't?

I'd have a real good look at the new contract before jumping ship - make sure that shit is iron clad for a specific time period, or you could find you've been used for something you knew nothing about, and out on your arse in under a year. I had this happen to me about 10 years ago.
