Covering for someone on PAT leave - who gets the deal?

Hey guys,

Right now I'm covering for someone I split a territory with who's on paternity leave.

My manager is trying to tell me that the opps I cover on his behalf belong to me and go to my pipeline/commission.

I've been absolutely destroying this colleague in terms of numbers, and we've gotten into fights before because he was jealous that I was doing better than him.

Maybe I'm playing too nice here, but I'm pushing back on my manager a little bit that I'm happy to cover because I know it's going to push this colleague over the edge if I'm stealing his shit while he's gone.

Help? What's typical when someone's on pat/mat leave?

You should have agreed to a split before they left for leave. Is there anything in your comp agreement on splitting deals?

If you're picking up projects that he started, then there should be some sort of split. If this is just you working, then it's yours.

This seems like the only fair approach.

This just seems like dangerous territory. I actually need to figure out what this looks like for my company in the event that my wife gets pregnant. I have never worked for a company that has PAT leave until now, so I am clueless as to how it plays out.

Is the rep on pat leave getting quota relief?

I would probably work something out then, especially if you are fielding inbounds. I would love to have the additional territory as long as possible so try to have it mutually beneficial so he doesnt come back in a hurry

Lol update, colleague is, in fact, getting quota relief - he got fired so these deals actually are mine and my manager was trying to cover his ass by not saying it straight up

at my company - the rep on leave takes a split on any deals already in the works with the rep covering for them. Any new business that gets spun up by the person covering for them now belongs to the covering rep.

Split if it's not new. If it's brand new then that turns into a different conversation.

wow this is super messy. how do you determine what is yours and his if you split a territory?

If he was not on PAT leave would he get this opp? if so I would tell the manager I would run it and give that person the credit.

Its just the right thing to do and sometimes even we sales ppl have to do the right thing

The splitting is messy, we get our deal from reps at a big tech company so we split it by rep relationship.

Yes, he'd be running this if he wasn't on pat leave. These are all existing opps, not net new

If he started them and you close them, there should be a split of some kind for quota relief and commission.

If you started it and close it while he's out, you should AT LEAST get the commission, but maybe he gets some quota relief (as it's his rep per your comment below).

If you start it and it doesn't close by the time he gets back, you might split it, or you could opt to be generous and let him have the whole thing.

Here's why your manager is getting you compensation while your coworker is out: He wants solid attention paid to your colleague's business, and the way to ensure that happens is to make sure you're paid. Otherwise, and understandably, that business will take a back seat and ultimately those avenues will suffer.

It's a tough position to be in, but understand that some kind of split in sales is extremely common in these situations.

Depends upon how much you he has worked on the opp before it was handed over. We split the commission and this is decided before taking up the task.

If its net new as in he hasn't worked it or had an active convo when he left then its all yours but if he started a convo then you should split it

pat/mat leave means they are not a elig team member all yours. if he wanted to bring up a split to management before leave he could have, but if not that's his loss for not being proactive
