Crazy and Unusual Job Market

My team leader position was eliminated back in January. I have spoken to 70 recruiters, interviewed less than a handful of times, and spoken to all of my network of former colleagues.  Fast-forward to today or four months later, and I find myself having no luck finding my next opportunity despite my strong CPG/FMCG experience in B2C (P&G, Conagra Brands, Revlon) and B2B channels (KraftHeinz and MonoSol which supplies water soluble film for Tide and Cascade pods).

I live in south Florida. I have a crazy and effective amount of experience selling, strategizing, leading teams, growing businesses, turning around businesss and finding new business all while being BILINGUAL in English and Spanish, working with distributor partners in both the US and International markets (LATAM, CANADA, APAC, MIDDLE EAST, AFRICA), coaching high performance teams, and rolling up my sleeves to get it done.

I notice the job market reflects the 2008-2009 job market when employers were more selective and there were limited mid-senior/senior level sales positions.

if you know anyone hiring please let me know. I always return favors a 1000X over.

Well, to me the candidate who is the most creative in his/her approach and how least salesy the candidate is, is the most appealing. (Being salesy is not a bad thing when applying for a sales job but it may trigger the hiring managers since they already have so much to do).
I'd rather refer someone who talks to me nicely, asks me for a referral, follows up in a nice way instead of the one who is messaging me, emailing me, sending messages on LinkedIn every other day.
Sending videos is a great way but also building a rapport with the hiring Manager. Change your CV if you feel that's not working too well for you.

All the best.

No opps to share but just wanted to say good luck and it's definitely tough out there. What worked well for me was doing personal outreach via video messages to hiring managers, team leads, etc. Getting in front of the right people is half the battle, especially with your experience - you just need to connect with the right companies and you will find it.

Thank you. Great advice. Are video messages a new thing now? How long were you out for from the job market? What do you think an acceptable unemployment duration time looks like?

Yes, video messages are 100% a huge thing now! I hadn't been in the job market in a long time so I was completely out of the loop but was lucky to connect with some awesome people who helped me immensely, and one thing I kept seeing across the board was how important video messages are. I wouldn't have landed the job I have now without them, and wouldn't have gotten at least 90% of my interviews either - and I know that since the first 2-3 months of my search I didn't use them. My results changed drastically once I did!

I took 8 months off before I started looking, so I ended up being out of work a year before I started my new job. I did NOT think it would be as hard as it was, or I definitely would not have taken so much time off haha. But now I am sharing this stuff when I can since it helped me so much!

Unemployment time barely came up in my experience and there are so many reasons why people may have long gaps (funny how we're expected to work non-stop our entire adult lives at risk of looking like there's something wrong with us). It won't stop the right company from hiring you unless you have some really strange reason so I'd say to not worry about that too much.

Video messages are a great tip, gonna start. What tool did you like?

Nice! I used Loom but had to also use a few other tools since it doesn’t allow you to edit besides trim and the captions can be really bad sometimes. But it has some good features (like you can see when it’s been viewed, and if they have a loom account it also shows their name) and it’s pretty well known which is a plus.

Checkout RepVue. But yea the market is pretty awful right now unfortunately. It’s almost as if experience that is longer than 10 yrs is looked down upon (from what I have been seeing). Heard people cutting early jobs off resume to get more interview. Either way good luck.

I've been getting dumped on by the job market, so you aren't the only one going through it man. Nothing to do but focus on what we can control (steady applying, networking, interview practicing) and just being ready for opportunities when they come.

Best of luck Alejandro. It is indeed a strange one out there.
Pro Tip: consider going anonymous here, you will derive more value.
We won't be able to contact you directly, so I would remove your email address from this post. We've had intermittent flooding with bots, I wouldn't want to see it being scraped into a phishing cadence.
I'd recommend polishing up that CV, LinkedIn. You can send us your CV (please remove any personal info), and we'd be happy to take a look.

You have great recommendations here already. The only suggestions is to be persistent when outreaching to hiring manager - do a follow up (I see many doing one outreach in bulk and then wait for a response).

the layoffs in tech flooded the market with solid candidates who have the resume to back it up so its a brutal time even for veterans like you no opps to share but good luck man

Hi there. One last question. After taking a full year did you take a pay cut to get back into it? If so how much was the salary reduction in % terms? Thank you.
