I think people should pay their dues, but that doesn't mean unpaid internships in my opinion

Agreed. The thing is, nobody is forced to take an unpaid internship.

In many industries, you actually are (think journalism). So then you end up with this cycle that only people from wealthy backgrounds can get the best internships (think NYT, WaPo, LA Times) because they're in expensive places and don't pay.

Everyone has to shovel shit starting out.ย  It's how you learn, grow and ultimately build the success of your career.ย  Totally agree that this is BS.ย  ย I would never be where I am without my first unpaid internship and even my first gig in the industry, where I was doing 50 things.ย  I learned so much.

The mentality of "I worked a terrible job when I was young so you have to as well" is a cancer. Why not try to make things better for the next generation?ย

I actually like Dan Price and think he makes some good points.

I don't know a lot of people that desire others to suffer because they once suffered at a shitty job. I do know a lot of people who view the shit-shoveling process as necessary to learn, grow, and craft a decent skillset. It seems cancerous only when you label that process as "not trying to make things better for the next generation". Also, what kind of process would making things better for the next generation look like compared to our current systems?ย

If you think shit-shoveling positions are the only way to learn, grow, and craft a decent skillset then we will never agree on this. And that's entirely okay.

What do you think of people getting their start in sales as a BDR? That's where I, and probably most people on here, cut my teeth in sales. I think we all know that it is a very difficult, thankless, yet necessary job. You have to learn how to deal with rejection after rejection to keep getting off the mat for that one "yes." Life as a BDR seems to be the best way to prepare you for dealing with rejection for the rest of your career. I understand what Dan is trying to say here, but I don't think there is anything wrong with expecting people to pay their dues when they start off working in sales. He's definitely got his rose-colored glasses on with that one.

I'm actually a huge fan of this dude. $70,000 minimum wage at his company (he's still a multi-millionaire), really advocates for workers, goes onto adversarial platforms and defends his cause.

Yes, I've seen him incessantly boast about this, and that's great he holds himself to that standard., but he's virtue signaling to an extreme. There are a lot of companies that have high starting salaries for entry-level workers with nothing except high school degrees (my company is one of them).

I don't think he's virtue signaling actually (though I totally get your view on that). I think he's trying to be an advocate for the cause and he's really the only prominent one.

I think people with the mindset he's highlighting grew up when things weren't as expensive.

The cost of school has more than doubled, almost tripled.

The cost of renting has tripled.

The cost of living has gone up so much that the "struggles" aren't comparable.

There's no chance I'd be able to have an unpaid internship, a side job, and be able to pay rent and student loans

I know @sahilย made a post recently about Dan Price. Don't want to turn this into a public bashing session, but there's more to him (Dan Price) than meets the eye and not in a good way.ย

I'm a big fan of Dan Price... BUT (stands on soapbox) also, I think every high school graduate should have to spend a year in a service industry job. kinda like the Israeli army lol. Primarily so the spoiled rich brats learn some character, the value of physical labor, and to treat service industry folks like actual human beings.ย
