I said no but to be fair I've never been a SDR.

Im curious, what route did each of you take to get into sales?

@Wolfof7thStreet did post-grad business and then started in a full cycle, though pretty transactional role. That was 2011, I don't think 'SDR' was a thing yet.

Got it, I didn't realize it was a new role as I've only been selling tech for a little over a year. Interesting!

TBH it could have been, and likely was in some spaces, but if so it was with nowhere near the prevalence of today.

I also wasn't in tech - I started out as an AE in financial services.

not neccessarily my messaging but I prioritized my own time more and looked for more reasons to DQ along the way to weed out people that would string me along

exactly, going back and forth with them and running a demo and some follow ups that ultimately go nowhere really means you lost that timeslot for something that could have added to your quota attainment.

Don't get me wrong, not every prospect is going to buy. But, if they don't have any desire or reason to chane then they won't. At the time I was sellign something that was an educational type sale and the product solved a recurring problem but in a different manner was somewhat early to market.

I spent so much time trying to convince people to change at the prospecting level because I believed in hte product so much. I should have just Dq'd and spent my time wiht people who were at the very least willing to change

Yes in the sense that my mission is now to get you in my pipeline versus setting a meeting, so it's more purposeful and targeted vs mass outreach.

"Messaging" in its most basic sense should be customer centric and looking to help buyers.  If you are changing messaging based on anything pertaining to you or your role then you are doing it wrong in my opinion.

1000%. It's now to invoke a response on if you're open to exploring, learning more, or if timing is right to solve X problem or help Y initiatives. If I get a response, I no longer overcome objections to get a meeting but seek to understand why timing might not be right now and, if not, when it will be.

Aside from that, my messaging has become more "higher level" to align more with broader business priorities and challenges as opposed to the specific challenges my solution solves

I’ve always been a full-cycle AE, and have never been given tools for automation.
