Differences between sales manager & sales director?

What are the biggest differences in responsibility between the two positions? For context I’m a sales manager at a SaaS startup with no director level yet (VP then managers). Want to make sure that I’m doing the director job so that when it comes time to add the level I’m a no-brainer for it.

A lot of times sales director is just an flowery way to describe an account executive.

I think the biggest thing about being is a director is you are managing managers under you or team leads under you. So if you want to show that you have "director like" experience, hire or appoint team leads and give them a roll up quota. This will show that you can indirectly manage the team as a director would.

Yes I think this is a good description in some cases.

The truth is, every org uses different titles. And titles don’t transfer over from one org to the other.

One org may call someone a manager when at another org on the other side of town calls them a director; even if they have the same roles / responsibilities.

This is good insight thanks Mr. Risk. Just heard from one of my buddies about a mutual friend that climbed the ranks to VP super quickly at then couldn’t hack it. Supposedly it’s mainly due to his inability to manage managers (amongst other things I’m sure).

Director of Sales
True story...I have been the sales manager at my company for years. With good, healthy growth, I needed what we had titled "an assistant sales manager" - someone to take some duties off my plate. Well, the candidate hired in the end was about 30 years my senior...and didnt want to be my assistant. He just decided to call me a sales director and himself the sales manager. He was eventually fired...but the title some how stuck. For 2 years now I have been the director and we also have a sales manager.

Not bad for the resume... no pay bump I assume though. Now that would be a sweet development.

Realistically, a director should manage a couple if not more managers. And managers manage AEs or SDRs but that is rhe main difference.
This is variable to territory or product depending on the company.

Completely dependent on companies. I have had a "sales director" role at several places as just an AE, whereas at a large company, the "director" title will be above a manager.  I always changed my title on LinkedIN since you'd get bombarded by recruiters if you were a director level there
