Discussion: Using a "white" name while on the phone.

Hi everyone,

Wanted to open a discussion on the ethics of using a "white" name while on the phone.

I personally have a native name and when selling to certain countries it can sometimes trip up prospects/slow down conversations.

For a period of two months at my old job, I used a white name, just an english translated version of my name to be honest, nothing huge in difference.

The difference I had in conversation and rapport building was absolutely staggering. I had customers saying my "name" multiple times in conversation, even sometimes signing off by saying "hey thanks x for the help", it was really nice building that kind of rapport with the customer.

Ethically, do people see anything wrong with using this tactic? I understand we're technically lying to the customer, but I personally feel it allows the conversation to flow smoother and helps build better rapport.

I don't see it as unethical at all. Is it unethical for someone to go by their middle name or shortened version of their real name? Of course not. Unless you're using a different name to be able to do harmful or unethical things, you're fine to go by whatever name you want.ย

I work with a couple of guys with ethnic names who go by a westernized version. I think it's pretty normal for anyone who does business on the phone. Not just because some people are biased or even racist, but because it's easier for most North Americans to remember and feel comfortable pronouncing "Luke" over "Luciano." Helps to create a rapport faster and easier, and any time you can come off as familiar to a prospect is an asset in selling.

Do what makes you comfortable. I want to punch people in the throat for it, prospects not you, but that's their ignorance - not on you.ย

I don't think the ethicality of the issues falls to you here - I think the ethical problem is on behalf of your prospects who treated you differently because you were using a "white" name.ย

If it serves you to use the white name - do it. Capitalize on unconscious bias.ย

It's not unethical at all.

There is literally no problem with this.

As a white guy, I can't relate to this, but I have worked with people who have done it.

The people I worked with said it made them feel more comfortable doing it, so that's the point right.ย

Certainly not unethical, IMO

If satire, it's still cringe.
