Diversity: is it attainable or does it have to be organic

I’m so confused by companies claiming to plan on hiring more diverse candidates because I don’t see how that isn’t hiring based on skin color. If you hire based on skin color that means a candidate lost out because of theirs, yes?

Serious question. Not looking for people to come for me with torches.

Absolutely not.

It's extremely hard to overrule your unconscious biases. Your unconscious biases force hiring managers to hire people that look like them, have similar experiences to them, etc.

By making an emphasis in finding people with very different life experiences, they're making a concerted effort to retrain our minds to bring people that look like us, act like us, eat the same food as us, have the same privilege as us, went to the same type(s) of schools as us, etc. into the organization.

Furthermore, diversity is just the presence of people other than the norm. It doesn't mean they feel like the belong, feel equity, or included. That's part of your job.

I can’t help that I was born white and don’t qualify for any diversity quotas. At the same time, in America at least, you do seem to have an edge being white, male, etc... and which is also messed up. I don’t think this will ever be resolved.

I agree with everything you said here except the last part. Call me an optimist, but I'm hopeful the corporate world can find a way to incorporate diversity without becoming ridiculously politically correct.

I know a number of companies that bring in recruiters that specialize in this. They have a number of connections

It's not hiring based on skin color.  It's examining everything from your JD's, to recruiting practices, to the weight given to those who refer their friends (who most often look like them).  Having recruiting/job fair events is one thing.  Having them at predominately white Universities, and no others, is another thing.  Rather than 'we're going to focus on black talent over white,' it's 'we've actually ignored a large part of the population in all our hiring efforts, let's fix that.'

The same goes for women and other minorities, really.  Companies that examine their JD's for non-inclusive language (etc) find way more candidates apply, giving them the advantage as a business.  Diversity of thought, background, perspective etc is very good for the bottom line, in addition to making better teams.

I think if you know how to interview a sales person you can get all the info out of them by asking questions and then letting them ask questions.
