Do companies really care about a positive THC result in a drug test? / What do you do if you know you're testing positive?

I'm located in a state where weed is legal recreationally (had my med card in the state I lived in previously where it was also legal recreationally). Didn't think to get another med card in the new state given it's not necessary to get kush. New job offer is contingent upon passing their drug screening - (company is HQ'd in a state where weed is legal- also where the job would be). I'm moving from tech sales (large public company- never been drug tested) to a large privately held company in the healthcare industry. Everything I've read online (indeed/glassdoor/fishbowl etc) is nonconclusive, but in the time between applying, interviewing, and receiving the offer, which stipulated I go through their drug screening within 48 hours of accepting, I still would not have been able to get THC out of my system - if you were going to comment something along the lines of "you should've sToPpEd sMoKing weed" please don't. Would really appreciate any advice on if I should expedite trying to get my medical card for when they call me about all of things I will inevitably test positive for (all other drugs are prescribed by doctors). Or if that is a waste of time and most companies don't care about THC, or don't care if you have a medical card?

I would hope that a company HQd in a state where the substance is legal would not give a rat's ass. If they do, honestly, fuck them.

Doubt it's going to be a big issue, more likely focused on weeding out the harder drugs (no pun intended)

Former drug rep of 10 years here 🙋‍♀️. I've had urine screen and my hair cut. Healthcare is strict. There's no certainty here. Go for it and see what happens.

With it being a private company they could make their own rules on it and even with a med card they may not care. That being said, may be worth it to be upfront with the hiring person/HR and let them know this will be showing up you have had your medical card in the past and it is legal recreationally and see what they say. Good luck either way and I hope they don’t care and bring you onboard

They usually send you to an off site place and they do not care what you say prescreen. Results are all they care about. They will ask for a proof of rx after if you pop positive.

i told my ceo i took cbd after i crushed it for a year. he said ok. if they know you're crushing it, they dont really care. keep it to yourself. but we have drug testing here and i wanted them to know it helps me out a lot.

update for reference in case someone comes across this post with the same question, fully passed the pre employment screen and am starting next week:) In respect to the drug test the only thing that they asked me about was Adderall to confirm the script with my pharmacy/doctor. So not sure if that was just this specific companies policy or what (because I should’ve tested positive for some other stuff), regardless thank you to everyone who commented- I was really losing it with nerves!

Quite honestly if you know it is going to show up tell them hey, I know I’m going to test positive for THC. It’s going to be worse if it shows up and you don’t say anything because that would be more annoying. Since it’s in a state where marijuana is legal I really don’t know the legal precedent and if they will revoke the offer because of it.
