Do I talk to my Sales director about the new micro manager?

We just got a new manager a few weeks ago and everything is pointing to him being a micro manager. he's never managed a team before either.

I'm pretty close to his boss and feel like I should be upfront. but I'm not sure how that will look in his eyes. I feel like it could backfire. I've consulted with the team and everyone pretty much feels the same. our last manager was amazing so this was super easy to identify almost immediately.

I can't go into another 1:1 just reciting the notes from Salesforce that we both can read, recapping each deal with updates, forwarding every damn internal email that we see.

Also, am I jumping the gun here? tough to say but I've dealt with people that seemed great initially and ended up being a shitty manager. this person already has so many red flags...

Have you tried to confront the manager by leveraging radical candor?

Definitely talk to the manager before blowing up their spot with the boss. If the shoe was on the other foot wouldn't you want the same courtesy?

Very wise advice here.

Of course. Totally right. I think I'm going to let this fully play out until I open my mouth. I could be thinking prematurely

Do you have a company Christmas party coming up? If so, make your manager take shots until he's blacked out and makes a fool of himself. Hopefully it'll lead to him being fired for doing something stupid

Get him blackout and in the shower, take pics while u sit back sipping a Moscow Mule in the cute copper cup, then blackmail the fuck out of him until he kills himself or quits.

We are having it this week and they are not going 🙄 not that I was going to take y'all's sick and twisted recommendations but that's another weird thing. They gave some odd excuse to not go which just sounded like they have better things to do/don't want to go. If I was new, I'd do whatever it takes to go to that first holiday party.

I think you gotta go to the source first. Going over someone's head rarely ends well

I agree. I don't want to ever go over anyone's head but I don't know what the best route is.

talk to the manager. hopefully they are mature enough to have a real conversation about it. if they aren't or nothing changes...then maybe take that next step

Is there an opportunity to provide feedback to this new manager knowing that this is his first time managing a team, and he may be working through how to be an effective leader?

Feels like that's the first step, then if the feedback isn't implemented, then I would raise it to your director.

As a leader, probably the last thing you wanna hear is that you are a micro manager. It's what everyone says they are not but they actually are.they do not seem like the type of person that would receive that well. They would probably hate me moving forward (yes, another red flag that they can't take criticism)

Wow, that's aweful. I think it's better to tell the person what annoys you. I don't know if this is the right approach but my manager always asks me 1 thing about him that annoys him and I just tell him.

Other red flags:
super nervous all the time.
Very fidgety during meetings and his voice changes.
Doesn't talk to you unless it's about a deal/work.
Shows almost zero personality in all meetings/1:1s

They're your manager, not your friend.

Also, they just started...

Cut them a little slack and give them constructive feedback. "You fidget and don't ask me about my weekend" doesn't count.

I'm not looking for a friend. By personality I mean showing that you're an actual human and not a robot. I couldn't care less about talking about my weekend.
I'm looking to enjoy the time that I spend with people that I see the most. I see/interact with coworkers more than my friends and family. I don't want to spend that time cringing and feeling awkward. Also, look at the title of the post. That is the main issue. But you're right about the timing. I could be jumping the gun.

As others have mentioned, I'd try and give feedback to your manager first. Get curious. If they are really digging in, ask what they benefit from. Ask them why their goals and motives are so you can get a better understanding of why you are going through the motion.

In my experience you have 2 options.

Option #1) You go to your boss’s boss and candidly explain the situation. and do it sooner as opposed to later because it will only get worse.

Option #2) new boss doesn’t get checked into reality. Progressively it gets worse and you and the team say fuck this noise and look for new jobs. Probably will happen within 12-18 months.
