It really depends from company to company and how good the collateral is.

When i was working for an enterprise software company with a 50 person in-house marketing team? Absolutely. They produced great content.

When i switched gears and worked for a startup with 1 person doing marketing and having to make due with shoddy graphics work? Almost never used it without heavily altering it first.

You make a great point. I've also noticed that when sales and marketing are siloed, reps rarely use marketing's content and on the flip side, marketing rarely seeks or implements feedback from reps. Similarly, I've worked for companies that had real engines and others that were just twiddling their thumbs, so I'm just curious!

I will use things like performance stats and all that but the materials themselves are usually awful. They also put what could be on 1 page into a full presentation the client won't read.

The data helps a lot though as I need it to give them an ROI

My marketing team has made some amazing online materials through PandaDoc. It makes it easy to delete what's not applicable to the prospect. Plus, it tells you who viewed it and when they forwarded it. I highly recommend PandaDoc if you're not already using it. All of our electronic contract signing goes through there too.
