Funny you ask this. I'm currently gathering myself before I have a "come to Jesus" meeting with a client for almost electrocuting one of my techs.

The job of an AE never ends with a signature.

Well, if you were properly trained, the minimum you're doing is building rapport with the other person and that's actually emotional intelligence at play. And that's like the bare minimum, so yes.

I have to work really hard at dropping my pragmatism when speaking with customers/prospects. I don't do it often, but when I do, I leave the meeting feeling exhausted.

To me, finding the emotional connection is pivotal to success and closing deals. It's not just a business transaction...you're helping someone in a positive way with your services or products. So yes, naturally I apply emotional intelligence because I am a human who cares...and also wants to get paid ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think emotional intelligence in sales is deeper than many posters here are speaking about.ย  Its not just getting a relationship with your client, its about hearing the message behind what they are saying and using that to your advantage.ย  Very rarely will a potential client say that they have a rubbish supplier to you in a discovery meeting, especially if that supplier was a previous decision of yours but if you use emotional intelligence to your advantage and ask the right questions you may find out more than what they are actually saying.

Yes. Empathy and knowing how to read a room. The latter being more important on a call with no video.
