Do you do it for the cash or the cred?

We all have our motivations for doing this crazy job. For me, it's about reputation, building my career, being someone people can count on. The money is really nice but it's secondary for me. How about you?

With 4 kids and my 40s looming, I don’t give a sh*t about the cred!

Supporting your family is important, but you can make money doing all kinds of things. Sales is not for everyone.

Can’t think of another career outside a doctor or lawyer that’s had the same income potential. At least in my experience...ok maybe a few others.

I love sales. It’s for me.

Yesssss but I will say this was not always my answer. When I was a fresh out the gate sales rep, the credit was equally important. Now after 11 years, just give me the money.

Cash. Anytime I look at leaving sales for a better work life balance without the pressure of a number, the cash is what keeps me from making the move.

I get it. Completely. It’s tough to walk away from the potential. That’s what’s so hard for me. I can always make even more.

Good point. I guess, I'm asking which is more important to you.

Tough call. I said cred but it’s entirely possible I’m full of shit. The cred would be less satisfying without the cash...

At first I did it for the money but now, I do it because it is a lifestyle. I cannot see myself doing anything else because all the other jobs are just so stagnant.

Sales is so different everyday and fluid. You have a lot of control and there is no other feeling like it.

This is definitely a response I can get behind. I love running my own business within the business and having different conversations with different kinds of people all the time. Thanks for the great answer!

One of the aspects of sales which we probably all take for granted is the credit you get for closing a deal.

I hear from other departments all the time about how bosses will steal credit for their subordinates work. I know sales managers can do this as well but you always get to share in the glory for the revenue you bring in and that is immensely satisfying.

So true. There's nothing like the feeling of crushing it and helping your company grow because of your effort.

There are way less stressful jobs that can get you credit/glory/whatever. They just don't pay nearly as well.

Very true. I think it's fair to say the money plays a major component in selecting this career. That said, is that what's driving you day to day while you're in the motion of doing the job?

Sales has clear end goals (closing deals, quotas). Staying focused on the process to do those things is enough for me.

Early in my career it was all about the cash, every decision I made was about my pocket book. Now it’s more about proving to myself all those hours I talked shit with my crew about my bosses and how “I could do it better”, getting rhe opportunity and excecuting on it.

Love this. I’m not quite at that level yet, but it’s inspirational to think about being a boss that’s trying to make things better.

I’m not going to lie, there are some parts that are just fun as hell. Identify snd document your processes now, you’ll need then as you continue to move up.

Great advice. I write everything down, thankfully. What are your favorite parts of being a leader? What’s the most fun?

Two things. I enjoy being able to see the folks on my team accomplish their dreams, things they never thought were possible (most financially) and take what they thought were jobs and become careers.  I also LOVE the perks that come with the job, I get to plan SKO, I get to plan Diamond Club (I hate the term Presidents Club), I get to purchase and plan SWAG, these little type things are really fun.

All of those things sound amazing. Club, in particular, is probably such a different and amazing experience as a CRO. Really getting to watch your team revel in their success must be so rewarding. I honestly never really thought about how much fun planning and buying Swag would be. Great callouts.

I try to be open and honest when I'm selling, but I don't care for the credit as much as I do the cash. I like the ability to live my life on my terms and money allows me to do that
