Do you guys really control it?

Do you feel during the sales process and conversations that you are the one holding the steering wheel and guiding the customer to purchase? Or do you just use good practices, present yourself nicely, respond quickly, and hope it will be positive?

In my case, it's more about trying and hoping to succeed. I've never had that feeling I was sure of the sale and had control over it. It's always a bit of a rodeo.

Do you consciously control sales?

this really depends on where your compan is positioned in the market, and how they found out about you.

if you are the market leader, companies will most likey come to you first when they are trying to figure out what they really need. this is when you can help drvie the sale.

but if you are an after thought in the market then you will most likely be faced with ppl who know exactly what they want, have seen other demos and have a few (not super important) features they want and the lowest price

this is not something you can "drive" you will be reactionary here

I reckon there's some element of skill to it because not everyone is good is at it. That being said, you can't control people, you can only influence them. Every choice you make every day has an element of chance to it.

I'd be lying if I said that even though I follow a good process that I didn't get surprised from time to time. I control what I can, but every so often, despite all indicators to the contrary, prospects make decisions that you can't explain.

That said, the more you control the process, the better your results will be.

I drive, but there's always things out of one's control.

Those are the things you don't focus on.

Impressive honesty there, and I mean that! Mostly, I feel like sales people are afraid to admit that they donโ€™t always know what theyโ€™re doing. Of course the first step to improvement is acknowledging a problem, so good for you.

That being said, I would say it varies. Sometimes I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the deal and where itโ€™s going. Of course, humans are highly unpredictable, so as @notmyrealname said they are hard to control.

Other times I feel like I have no control of the sale and Iโ€™m just kinda flowing along hoping for the best. Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesnโ€™t.

The times I fell into control is when Iโ€™ve been able to truly identify the business problem and show the customer that Iโ€™ll be the best option to solve it. The times when Iโ€™ve lacked control is when itโ€™s just a feature/function sale.

I would recommend reading Gap Selling by Keenan, as it is a really good resource for guiding you towards a business problem oriented selling model.

Cant say it's 50/50 but there is definitely skill and luck involved. More skill than luck. 80/20

It really depends on the product/solution and customer.

I really am more of a putter together of the right people, public speaker, and contract manager. But you bet your ass Iโ€™ll take that sweet, sweet commision.
