Do you have an alter (sales) ego?๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿป

I like to pretend I'm Jackie O and I have a picture of her on my desk. It literally makes me sit up straight, feel more confident, and close more deals.

Any other Jackie O's out there with me? Do you have an alter "sales" ego?

You know nothing about alter-egos. You just play yourself all day e'ryday

I had an SDR who did this. Her name was Emily but her cold caller was Emilia. That way if someone was rude to her on the phone she could think to herself "wow they were REALLY rude to Emilia..." almost like they were rude to one of her friends. It seemed to work well for her.ย

I used to call into a very conservative, non diverse part of the south. Problem is: my government name is clearly non-Western (ringing a bell, if you will).

So I started calling as "David" or "Jack". At one point my alter-ego developed a heavy southern accent. The jury is still out on whether it helped my sales in any way.

That's funny, I sold into the South for years and found myself using Y'all and Fixn' a lot

Dude went through a similar thing. I used to introduce myself as "My 6th grade campaign slogan was: Don't be a heel, vote for Sahil."ย

It's the only way people could remember how to pronounce my name.ย

Always ended it by saying: "In unrelated news... I didn't win." Got a chuckle. Nothing like self-effacing humor.

@Marketers: take notes

It's the laugh that matters man. Now I say "*redacted* like a Doorbell" and it works 6/10 times every time

Not necessarily an alter-ego....but I definitely tap into my alternate world where no one can beat me. You have to be a little bit of a headcase, right?ย

yeah, for a few months I used another name on the phone. I have a native name that's hard to pronounce if your not from my country. Switched to a "white" name and could not believe how quickly the conversations improved, rapport building was easier and even more profound was the amount of times they said my "name" in the conversation. Sad to say but i'm convinced having a white name makes it easier to sell.ย

This reminds me of my sister when she would play soccer. It's like she would be a totally different person on the field and I don't think she could've played any other way.

When I'm on the phones, I'm a geek and product-obsessed so I just nerd out on our software and it seems to get people excited.ย

I don't think I could adopt an alter-ego because it would make me feel uncomfortable and unnatural on the phones, but I understand why some people do it.

I try to be as transparent as possible based on my personality trait so customers won't catch me off the character. But, there's a fine line between being professional and "too" personal to your trueself

Not sure if this is answering the question but i certainly have an office / sales persona and make a conscious effort to compartmentalize my personal and professional life. I think as a result, iโ€™m seen as a bit of a square by some of my colleagues but iโ€™m cool with it.

Naw, I think it is best to be authentic and real with people -- including yourself. I like that you have someone to look towards and emulate, but you yourself are good enough. If there is too much pressure or mental anguish over your work, maybe find a different way to operate. Detach from the outcomes, work on positive thinking, etc.ย

I just worry hearing people feel better off "being" someone else.ย

No I don't have an alter ego per say, but I do put on a spritz of Chanel before important meetings/calls. Makes me feel invincible.ย

I don't really have an alter-ego but I do use a much friendlier voice when speaking to customers/prospects than I would in real life.ย
