Do you think that every workplace should have 3 paid mental health days??

I feel like this should be a thing!

Especially in sales, I feel like even if it was taken from PTO lol.

What are your thoughts?

I think we should have mandatory Mental Health Days (4/year, 1/Q). This requires that we're proactive about preventing burnout.

Very good thought! That would be a good idea! It should be like middle of the month to get your head right, to still try and finish the month out in the right mental space, no matter where you are!

For sure! If you tell people they have unlimited PTO then tie their livelihood to a quota, it's hard to feel permission to take time off.

Offering a mandatory health day helps highlight that rest is needed and encouraged!

Also, it starts at the top. Emotionally healthy leaders have emotionally healthy teams.

Yes! I think that often times leaders feel like they do not need mental health days, and that it poses as sign of weakness, but everyone isn't always batting 100%.

This would be a game-changer for SO MANY of the sales-savages I know. A quarterly day to clear your head so you can see the forest through the trees... that would be a welcome change.

I use PTO days for whatever I want, be it an appointment, mental health, or "it's nice out and I want to go to the beach."

The average vacation/PTO balance in Canada seems to be two weeks, three to four if you're senior level. I'd like to see more generous balances become the norm especially for sales. A week twice a year just isn't enough with the level of stress we take on.

I feel you on that. we get 2 weeks after being here for a year, but I always feel like I have to use it wisely and be cautious with it incase I do get sick, ect!

But we are Canadians, and the ability to stay at home when you're sick, or recover from surgery/having a child for 18 months paid is a concept so far out of the norm for americans... I lol'd.

Sorry about the union stuff yesterday. Caught me on a rough wednesday.

I agree, Canadians definitely have it better than Americans when it comes to leave. Sick days are still pretty stupid here, though. No issue in the sales orgs I've worked for, but back when I was In many entry level positions you're punished and guilted for taking a sick day. I recall many times where my fellow restaurant employees would come to work and cook/serve food with a runny nose looking like death because they'd lose hours if they called in sick...super ridiculous.

As for the union conversation - all good, I didn't take it personally!

We have unlimited PTO, which I frequently use if I am feeling burnt out. I typically just take a day off and try and do something outside

Yes but it has to be accompanied by a supportive environment.

if someone needs 3 days a year, then they may also need some more assistance.

I sell into HR and mental health/wellbeing is one of the main talk tracks, and it’s quite alarming how ill prepared a lot of companies are in this day and age

We have sick days we can use for mental health days. They are separate from PTO which is great.

Nice. after 6 months we get 1 week, but at 1 year it resets. And at 1 year we get 2 weeks. But it is all together!

Sales for the most part is already set up for you to take as much time as you want.

2 exceptions:

1- you hit your numbers
2- you take action and actually take the days off

Most people fail in either box.

Quota relief (for at least 1 month per year) would be better.

I would argue that there should be more than that. Compared to other countries, the idea of having to budget days that you're allowed to be sick, burnt out, or spending time with family/friends is insane. I find myself burning through my PTO just because I need time to let my brain slow down and reset, and it doesn't seem right.

yeah, the thing I hate is when using PTO you have to give reasons. or if you call in "sick" you have to also provide proof..with mental health days, there is no explanation needed!

Definetly and I also think companies should allow women free days at least one per month for that time of the month...im saying this because I see how painful it is with my gf and sister and we had this discussion.

I’d much rather the org give a total number of days off.

It doesn’t matter if it’s sick, vacation, or mental health. It pulls from that pool of days off. This allows you to do what you want.

Hell no. Those are your days. They are combined so I don't care if you are sick, at an all inclusive resort, or just hanging out at home.

However, if you are doing something cool, or going somewhere that will make me jealous I definitely want to know.

You do not need to provide an explanation for what you are doing but most people provide one because everyone on the team is pretty good friends and interested in what they have going on.
