I sometimes look up prospects on Twitter to see if they've posted anything interesting I can relate to. Same with Facebook - just another way to gather more information about them before talking to them on a call or in person.

It depends on the industry. When I was selling to marketers I would do this. So many of them have active Twitters. Mostly just asking questions and like things on Twitter, and then I'd add them on Linkedin
