Does anyone ever overprep for a cold call?

I've been trying to get in touch with one prospect who I thought I had a silver bullet for.

After 18 no answers, she's up on the list and answers. I froze for second and my silver bullet wasn't silver.

Anyone else ever do that?

100%.
I am an advocate for researching prospects but sometimes I do too much and then when I ring I just get verbal diarrhoea. It's a blessing n a curse.ย

haha, it was little thing I had learned over the course of them not answering in cadence.ย

I usually go on the website or something while it's ringing.ย

What was the silver bullet?ย

Kind of a long story, but the prospect had a journalistic background and is a marketing DM. The content they're putting out screams that they're looking to earn thought leadership type media. So she probably sees PR/journalism as a good marketing channel. I sell something that helps with content marketing, that was my pivot.ย

I find sometimes we have these amazing relevant connections/silver bullets but we miss the opportunity to discuss them because we don't get the chance to even bring them up. I'd focus on having a quick value add that can spur an initial conversation where you can then bring up that background and really get the convo going.

This is why I do next to 0 prep for a cold call. Discovery call? I'll definitely prep a bit, but cold calls can go any direction. It's best to be able to pivot.

What to do before a cold sales call? Information is power. Before contacting your prospect, make sure you get to know them very well. Above all, the needs or "pains" that you can solve with your product or solution. Study market conditions. Is it the ideal time to contact this person? Are you going to offer him a discount or an offer that he cannot refuse? All the data that you can collect will be useful to appeal to the need and urgency for your product or service, and to take advantage of a window of opportunity.

Well for me this is nearly impossible but yes. Too much info makes it more difficult sometimes.ย

Iโ€™ve learned that a lot of times if I feel that โ€œpreparedโ€ it comes off really unnatural when I actually get them on the phone. I try to learn just whatโ€™s useful and not overthink/map everything out for the call before it happens. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Honestlyโ€ฆ I donโ€™t prep for a cold call. Thereโ€™s no point. Odds are, they probably arenโ€™t going to answer. Iโ€™ve booked Director and above leadership at $1B+ orgs and thereโ€™s no silver bullets. Either you solve their problems or you donโ€™t. Let the calls rip - stick to your process - donโ€™t over complicate things.

Yep. Especially to CTOs. I always get in my own head and don't end up using anything I thought I needed during my prep lol.ย
